The National Center for Art Research (NCAR; Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Director: Kataoka Mami) will host a symposium, “National Art Museums Today.” The symposium will be held on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at The National Art Center, Tokyo.
In March 2023, the National Center for Art Research (NCAR) was established in Japan by the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art. As with the other institutions overseen by the administrative institution, the Center endeavors to achieve greater functionality as a national center based on Japan’s art and culture promotion policies. The Center is also dedicated to enhancing the overall activities of the country’s museums by, among other things, compiling and disseminating information domestically and internationally, promoting the active utilization of national museum collections, constructing a human network, expanding learning programs, and providing support for artists.
In this symposium, “National Art Museums Today,” designed to commemorate the establishment of the National Center for Art Research, we introduce national museum policies in Europe, the US, and Asia, as well as examples of the missions of and various programs at these institutions in an effort to reconsider the role of the national art museum and its contribution to society.
