Position description
The Department of Visual Arts at UC San Diego seeks candidates for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor. Creative practice and demonstrated accomplishment in contemporary computer aided design, simulation, and fabrication/machining techniques in an art making context is required.

Upon promotion, the teaching professor series offers security of employment (analogous to tenure) and focuses on specialized technical education, with a primary focus on teaching and teaching assistant development. While this position is not a research faculty position, members of the series are expected to maintain professional achievement and activity which might include research, art practice, professional service, or publishing. Additional information is available here.

The main focus of teaching is upper division, advanced classes on computer aided design and additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques for art making, working in a critique based pedagogical environment that promotes regular gallery exhibition and public presentation of student work. Other teaching service will include senior projects as well as occasional service in Computing in the Arts introductory survey, speaker’s series or topical seminar courses as needed. UCSD is on a quarter system. The incumbent will teach an annual load of 6 classes, two per quarter, across the fall, winter and spring.

The successful applicant will be expected to establish a vigorous program of high quality art and design teaching, professional engagement, and service that includes shared governance oversight of teaching laboratories and curriculum planning in the Interdisciplinary Computing in the Arts Major.

This appointment is expected to begin July 1, 2024 and salary is commensurate with experience and based on the University of California pay scales. The position will remain open until filled.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Applicants must possess an MFA, MArch, or PhD, or have advanced to candidacy in such a program at the time of application. For PhDs without a praxis component, three years of equivalent career experience in making and exhibition in museums, galleries or arts festivals, artist residency programs, public or private commissions, or other arts recognition.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Applicants must have completed the MFA, MArch, praxis PhD, or PhD with equivalent relevant career experience as described in basic qualifications.

Preferred qualifications
Preferred candidates will be able to demonstrate the potential for teaching excellence as they will be expected to supervise teaching assistants and teach undergraduate students in art courses.

Interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary experience is highly valued, especially in other areas of 3D, simulation, and computer programming when considering their overlap with other fields including engineering, architecture, the sciences and entertainment. Candidates with demonstrated experience with or willingness to engage in activities that contribute to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion at UC San Diego are especially encouraged to apply.
