The Fifth Season
October 17–22, 2023
Paris+ par Art Basel and the Musée du Louvre are delighted to announce the 26 artists participating in La Cinquième Saison (The Fifth Season), a freely accessible exhibition curated by Annabelle Ténèze, the incoming Director of the Louvre-Lens Museum, taking place from October 17–22 in Paris’s storied Tuileries Garden. This is the second year in a row that Ténèze curates an exhibition conceived especially for the garden as part of Paris+ par Art Basel’s public program, which unfolds across six iconic locations in the French capital. The show is realized in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre.
La Cinquième Saison draws from Ténèze’s 2022 Tuileries show La Suite de l’Histoire (The Aftermath of History). Against the background of climate change—between ecological urgency and cultural preservation, in an urban environment where the effects of global warming are exacerbated—the participating artists present works that underscore the interdependencies of vegetal, aquatic, mineral animal, and human life. In doing so, they bring the vital forces lurking between the Tuileries Garden’s rocks, under its roots, and within its ponds to the fore, all to the beat of the city.
“I am happy to propose an exhibition featuring artists from different generations and continents who consider their works ‘living objects,’ objects that are touched by life,” says Ténèze. “They address not only the marks we leave on nature, but also those nature leaves on us. The environment and how we cohabit with the protagonists of our ‘terrestrial community’ are fundamental to their practices; they hence invite us to look and listen to the movements of the garden and its inhabitants in subtle and innovative ways,” she adds.
