Fourth Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2023
September 1–October 29, 2023
The fourth Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2023, which discusses the vision of sustainable future cities, will take place from September 1 to October 29 at various locations in the heart of Seoul, including Songhyeon Green Plaza, Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture, and Seoul Citizens Hall. The event will run for a total of 59 days.
The exhibition of this year’s Seoul Biennale reflects on ways of coexisting with nature and the mechanisms of the city. Under the leadership of the Chief Director, architect Byoung Soo Cho, eight curators participated in the exhibition planning. With the theme “Land Architecture, Land Urbanism” the exhibition introduces globally diverse urban and architectural projects that are sustainably designed physically, historically, and culturally while respecting the environment and culture of the land.
Furthermore, under the sub-theme “City of Mountain Ranges, Waterways, and Wind Breezes- Drawing of the Seoul’s Next 100 Years”, the exhibition presents a master plan for an environmentally friendly high-density city, Seoul, while imagining the city’s state a century from now.
The exhibition is divided into five sections: a thematic exhibition that presents concepts and discourses related to the theme, the Seoul 100-Year Master Plan exhibition, a Guest City exhibition showcasing examples from cities around the world related to the theme, an on-site project exhibition that explores the theme through interactive displays, and a Global Studio that serves as a platform for discussions among students from architecture universities worldwide.
Following the opening ceremony on September 1, the Opening Forum will unfold under the theme “Public Strategy of Multi-Layered City.” This forum, divided into three sessions, delves deeply into various strategies of global cities for public activities in high-density, multi-layered urban environments, as well as new proposals for urban grounds and case studies from cities aiming to expand such strategies. The forum will be available for viewing through the official YouTube channel of the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the official YouTube channel of Seoul Biennale through live broadcasts.
