Presenting the partnership’s international, digital collaborative final projects between artists and arts professionals that identify with and without disabilities.
Art et al. is pleased to announce the completion and share the outcomes of Art et al. X Ketemu, a collaborative digital partnership between the UK and Indonesia that happened across 2022–23. Funded by the British Council through their international Collaboration Grants, it fostered six collaborations between artists and arts professionals that identify with and without disabilities. Each partnership involved someone from each country, with translators where needed.
Art et al. X Ketemu is broken down into three main programmes as follows:
Peer/Peer Collaborations
These pair two artists internationally, one identifying with disability, to connect digitally (over Zoom or sending videos) and make new work together—be that joint or collaborative works. The two Peer/PeerCollaborations of Art et al. X Ketemu are Pit Stop, Mari Mampir: Karin Josephine X Christian Newby, and Cyanotype Collaborations: Chris Angell X Budi Agung Kuswara.
Curatorial Mentorships
These pair an artist identifying with disability with an international curator. The experience is learning about the multifaceted role of a curator. The outcome is a digital presentation featuring several artists selected by the mentee, and supported by the mentor. The two Curatorial Mentorships of Art et al. X Ketemu are FANDOMINIUM: Lala Nurlala X Matt Burrows (Curator at Exeter Phoenix in the UK), and The Visible and The Invisible: Toyin Olubamiwo X Ignatia Nilu (Curator of ARTJOG International Contemporary Art Festival)
Curating Collections
These pair an artist identifying with disability with an international art collection. They connect virtually with the collection shared with the artist. The artist develops a theme and selects artwork from the collection for an e-catalogue. The two Curating Collections of Art et al. X Ketemu are #BehindInterest: Butong X the Roberts Institute of Art in the UK, and Elements of Bali: Sally Hirst X Mia Tjahjadi (GULA Art Space) in Indonesia.
Artists curated into the digital outcomes of Art et al. X Ketemu include Miriam Cahn, Jeppe Heim, Larry Achiampong, David Blandy, Ida Bagus Indra, Dadang Christanto, Leslie Thompson, and Mulyana.
On the Art et al. platform, you will find an e-catalogue showcasing the six programmes, alongside a commissioned text giving an overview by Katrina Schwarz, curator of the Deutsche Borse Photography Foundation Prize and Curator of Special Projects at Whitechapel Gallery.
Art et al. is an international inclusive curatorial platform of collaborations between artists from supported studios, peers, and arts professionals that highlights diverse voices and creative practices. It was founded in 2020 by Jennifer Lauren Gallery; Slominski Projects; and Sim Luttin and Arts Project Australia who all identified a need for more inclusive programming and access points into the contemporary arts sector for neurodivergent, learning or intellectually disabled artists to be seen, heard, and participate.
