Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Karlsruhe, the University of Arts and Design founded in 1992, is entering the next phase of its continuous transformation and seeking to appoint of three new professors. We are looking for people with a high profile as designers, artists and theorists who wish to join this process of collective development.
HfG Karlsruhe offers five study programs and seven degrees in Media Art, Communication and Product Design, Exhibition Design & Scenography, Art Theory & Media Philosophy. The following positions are to be filled at the next possible date, ideally to begin in April (summer term) 2024:
Professor for Future Philosophy and Scenarios (100 percent, three years)
Against the backdrop of global challenges on an ecological, socio-economic and technical level, this temporary professorship focuses on conceptual thinking and theoretical modelling as intermediaries with the world they help constitute. It aims to counter hegemonic geographical boundaries and to expand the philosophical canon internationally. The professorship will incorporate historical and contemporary projections of the future beyond existing models, and adddresses alternative technologies and forms of societal organization that appear in disciplines such as cultural studies and historical anthropology.
Professor of Visual Communication and Research (100 percent, unlimited)
The field of communication design is subject to constant change and needs to be continuously expanded by new areas of activity and competences. We are looking for an internationally recognised personality with a contemporary artistic and pedagogical concept, an extensive network and significant professional and teaching experience. The professorship aims to promote a diverse and inclusive vision of communication design in relation to social issues, digital cultures as well as historical antecedents.
Professor for Mixed Realities (66 percent, six years)
We are looking for an internationally active and proven artistic personality who is positioned in the field of digital arts at the intersection of humans and machines. The call is aimed at practices crossing borders and working confidently and critically with the possibilities of digital (e.g. sensor-based) interaction, data- and net-based art and composition, AI., Game Creation and “Game Destruction”.
All candidates are to comprehensively represent their respective fields in a multidisciplinary university in research, art and teaching across all courses of study.
