Since establishing their New York-based design practice in 1989, Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi have developed an international reputation for projects that encompass landscape, architecture, infrastructure and art.
This fall, the Weiss/Manfredi cofounders, winners of both the 2020 Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture and the 2018 Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Institution’s National Design Award, will discuss their work as part of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis’ fall Public Lecture Series.
Uniting WashU’s academic units in art, architecture and design with its nationally renowned Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, the Sam Fox School brings an interdisciplinary approach to contemporary issues and challenges, from sustainable design and digital technologies to the importance of strengthening local communities. In all, the fall Public Lecture Series will feature more than a dozen speakers across nine events that together highlight themes relating to climate, urbanism and cultural politics.
Weiss and Manfredi, who will speak October 16, are known for placing environmental stewardship and sustainability at the core of their work. Major projects range from the Seattle Museum of Art’s Olympic Sculpture Park, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center and Hunter’s Point South Waterfront Park to the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking at Yale University and the Tata Innovation Center at Cornell Tech.
Also speaking this fall, on October 19, will be Spanish architect Javier García-Germán, the Sam Fox School’s Ruth & Norman Moore Visiting Professor. Founder of the award-winning practice TAAs—totem arquitectos asociados—García-Germán also directs the Madrid School of Architecture’s graduate programs in collective housing and ecological building. Recent projects include the Castellana 94 office building and the 159-unit Carabanchel collective housing for the Madrid city council.
A complete list of speakers is below. All talks are free and open to the public and begin at 5:30pm Central time in the Sam Fox School’s Steinberg Hall unless otherwise noted. For more information, call T +1 314 935 9300 or visit here.
