Germany’s most important international theater festival—Theater der Welt—is coming to Frankfurt and Offenbach from June 29 to July 16, 2023. The 16th edition of the festival was initiated and realized by the three Frankfurt cultural institutions Künstler:innenhaus Mousonturm, Museum Angewandte Kunst and Schauspiel Frankfurt as well as the Office for Cultural Management of the City of Offenbach. The festival’s directors, Anna Wagner, Marcus Droß, Matthias Wagner K and Anselm Weber, have transferred the artistic program direction to the Japanese festival producer Chiaki Soma. For the first time in its history, the festival is thus headed by a non-European program director. Chiaki Soma’s curatorial concept responds to current events in Europe and the world. For Theater der Welt, the Museum Angewandte Kunst—one of the central meeting points of the festival—will be transformed into an Incubation Pod, a large, tangible dream world. Tickets for this are available on the website of Theater der Welt.
The works of the following artists and collectives will be on view at the Museum Angewandte Kunst: Trajal Harrell (Zurich, Athens), Saodat Ismailova (Tashkent, Paris), Keiken (London, Berlin), Boogaert/VanderSchoot (Amsterdam), Aya Momose (Tokyo), Meiro Koizumi (Yokohama) and El Warcha (Tunis). The artists’ works invite visitors to immerse themselves in interactive installations and virtual realities. They stimulate reflection and imagination while creating a place in the museum where visitors can take a break and regain their strength. A variety of performances, workshops and talks will complement the diverse program. In addition to the world premiere of Echo’s Chamber, two works by Aya Momose will celebrate their European premieres. With physical proximity and touch becoming taboo in parts of the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, the tactile, participatory performance Performing Acupuncture ventures into establishing contact via acupuncture needles.
On Saturday, July 8, the Museum Angewandte Kunst will be open through the night for an extended, dreamlike visit through various artistic worlds.
A day ticket can be purchased for 15 euros (reduced rate 8 euros). Extra tickets are available for the performances of Boogaert/VanderSchoot and Aya Momose and Meiro Koizumi’s Prometheus the Fire-Bringer. Tickets to Boogaert/VanderSchoot and Aya Momose include the day ticket.
