M+ is pleased to present M+ Sigg Collection: Another Story and the Sigg Prize 2023 in the fall. M+ Sigg Collection: Another Story highlights the diversity and breadth of contemporary Chinese art from the 1990s to the present, while Sigg Prize 2023 is the exhibition showcasing the works of six shortlisted artists for the biennial award.
M+ Sigg Collection: Another Story
M+ Sigg Collection: Another Story takes a visual approach to examine the styles and practices of contemporary Chinese art from the 1990s to early 2000s. Different from the sociopolitical framework and chronological narrative of From Revolution to Globalisation, the inaugural exhibition of the M+ Sigg Collection, Another Story is a thematic survey that explores how artists reconsider their cultural identity and express uncertain states of being during China’s rapid modernisation in the 1990s. The exhibition brings together a multitude of works that exhibit qualities of overflowing visuals, ambiguous meaning, obsessions with transience, and new interpretations of tradition. Another Story is the second of three planned exhibitions of the M+ Sigg Collection. It offers a different perspective on contemporary Chinese art and foregrounds its unique visual language through the lens of artists asserting their own presence.
M+ Sigg Collection: Another Story is co-curated by Dr Uli Sigg, Dr Pi Li (former Sigg Senior Curator and Head of Curatorial Affairs at M+), Isabella Tam (Curator, Visual Art, M+), and Dr Wu Mo (Sigg Curator, M+).
Sigg Prize 2023
September 23, 2023–January 14, 2024
Sigg Prize 2023 is a biennial exhibition celebrating outstanding artistic practices from the Greater China region. In this second edition, the six shortlisted artists—Jes Fan, Miao Ying, Wang Tuo, Yu Ji, Xie Nanxing, and Trevor Yeung—present works touching on pertinent issues and contemporary topics that have upended everyday life. From the COVID-19 pandemic and tense geopolitical climate to the evolution of artificial intelligence, the artists aim to foster and bring these conversations to a wider audience.
With their takes on cultural kinship, Jes Fan and Trevor Yeung highlight experiences of segregation and interior trauma, which are closely tied to changes in social and institutional systems. Xie Nanxing and Yu Ji look for balance between vulnerability and resilience through their respective painting and sculptural practices. Drawn to the interconnection of past, present, and future, Wang Tuo and Miao Ying explore ways to evaluate history and the contemporary moment.
Sigg Prize 2023 is curated by Isabella Tam, Curator, Visual Art, M+, and assisted by Ariadne Long, Assistant Curator, Visual Art, M+ and Chloe Wong, Curatorial Assistant, M+.
Established by M+, the Sigg Prize recognises artists born or working in the Greater China region and its diasporas based on their practices over the past two years. The finalists are invited to present their works in the Sigg Prize exhibition at M+ and a winner will be selected by the jury based on the works displayed.
The jury members are Maria Balshaw (Director, Tate, United Kingdom), Bernard Blistène (former Director, Musée national d’art moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2013–2021), Stuart Comer (The Lonti Ebers Chief Curator of Media and Performance, The Museum of Modern Art, New York), Gong Yan (Director, Power Station of Art, Shanghai), Glenn D. Lowry (Director, The Museum of Modern Art, New York), Suhanya Raffel (Museum Director, M+, Hong Kong), Dr Uli Sigg (collector and member of the M+ Board), Polly Staple (Director of Collection, British Art, Tate, United Kingdom), and Xu Bing (artist). Polly Staple and Stuart Comer served in placed of Maria Balshaw and Glenn D. Lowry respectively for the second jury meeting.
