Issue no 20 of Extra Extra Magazine is here. Let these 208 pages of personal encounters and sensual exploration guide you through humming city streets and hidden metropolitan corners. Packed with richly varied perspectives from the forefront of cultural practice today, sharing insights on art and literature, design and the erotic, the issue presents open, playful meditations on the intertwining of city life and creative production.
This issue of Extra Extra marks our ten-year anniversary, and is enveloped inside a cover graced by the work of artist Salman Toor. We are proud to display Salman’s work—its decidedly rich strokes imbuing drama into daily scenes, blurring pleasure and satire—in a tantalising portfolio feature. Turner Prize-nominated Rory Pilgrim talks with Susan Gibb about trust, intimacy, and the emancipatory possibilities of the imagination in their long-read interview. Dancing fluidly across 16 pages is Bathers at Midnight, a vibrant series of lines and marks developed especially for the magazine by artist Priscila Fernandes. Choreographer and dancer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui moves with feeling, too, and follows the senses in conversation with Judith Vrancken, while filmmaker and leading voice in French cinema Alice Diop shares the view behind her lens with Nicholas Elliott. They zoom in on the histories encapsulated in her subjects, the defiant potential of sensuality and the importance in the act of truly looking.
We devote our recurring feature “The Protagonist of the Erotic” to the iconic oeuvre of poet Anne Carson, as Canan Marasligil explores the delicious position she takes at the boundary, and we feature the commissioned essay “Sensuous Senescence” by philosopher Franco “Bifo” Berardi. Michael Portnoy muses on jokes in all their forms, while Sam Steverlynck talks with enigmatic musician Sylvie Kreusch in a squatted flat in Ghent. You can also find eight new erotic short stories along with words and works by Juan Brenner, Kamonlak Sukchai and many, many more.
