Fondazione In Between Art Film is pleased to unveil details of its 2023 program of commissions and collaborations promoting the culture of moving images. Created in 2019 by Beatrice Bulgari, the Fondazione’s mission is to support international artists, institutions, and research centers that explore the dialogue between disciplines and the boundaries between film, video, performance, and installation.

Throughout 2023, the full range of formats in which the Fondazione operates will be visible, from commissioning original works and exhibitions for the benefit of public institutions, to continuing its support of museums and non-profit organizations. The Fondazione will coproduce new video installations by artists who are enriching our understanding of ecology, representation, consumerism, and heritages; pursue the dialogue between disciplines and engage with historical perspectives on feminist filmmaking; and keep on supporting researchers and writers in deepening the discourse around lens-based practices.

Unison, a new biennial initiative by the Fondazione to conceive, commission, and produce video installations to be exhibited in collaboration with international institutions, launches in 2023 with the first exhibition in Italy by artist and director Ali Cherri, opening in October at GAMeC, Bergamo, and traveling to FRAC Bretagne in February 2024. Commissioned and produced by the Fondazione, it will be the largest presentation to date of Cherri’s multimedia practice and will continue his critical investigation into archaeology, heritage, and preservation as well as their politics of classification and displacement (curated by Alessandro Rabottini and Leonardo Bigazzi). For this occasion, the Fondazione has also commissioned and produced a new video installation by Cherri.

Other production highlights from the 2023 program include: coproducing Tactile Afferents (2023), a new video installation developed by design studio Formafantasma in collaboration with artist Joanna Piotrowska for a solo exhibition opening at the National Museum of Norway, Oslo, in May (curated by Hanne Heide); coproducing Reincarnation of Shadows (2023), a new filmic work by Thao Nguyen Phan commissioned by Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan, for the artist’s solo exhibition opening there in September (curated by Lucia Aspesi and Fiammetta Griccioli); and coproducing two new films, one by Gerard Ortín Castellví that will premiere in Florence on the occasion of Lo schermo dellarte—Cinema and Contemporary Art Festival in November, and one by Randa Maroufi.

The Foundation will continue its support for the activities of the Tate Film program at Tate Modern in London, Lo schermo dellarte in Florence, Floating Cinema in Venice, as well as of the Videogallery at MAXXI Museum in Rome. Here in June, the single-channel video Icarus (2021) by Giorgio Andreotta Calò, a work that the Fondazione recently purchased with the aim of donating it to the MAXXI Museum’s collection, and the video installation Protocol 90/6 (2018) by Masbedo, commissioned by Manifesta 12 Palermo and produced by the Fondazione, will be included in FUORI TUTTO, an extensive new presentation of the Museum’s collection (curated by MAXXI Arte with the artistic direction of Bartolomeo Pietromarchi). In November, No Master Territories: Feminist Worldmaking and the Moving Image will present, for the first time in Italy, an adaption of the titular landmark exhibition, which premiered at HKW, Berlin, in Summer 2022 (curated by Erika Balsom and Hila Peleg).

This year will also see new issues of the quarterly online publication STILL—Studies on Moving Images, the Fondazione’s platform for in-depth studies and original texts about works in the Collection (edited by Bianca Stoppani).

The Fondazione is also delighted to announce it will return to Venice for the Venice Biennale 2024 to present a new major exhibition featuring newly commissioned and produced time-based media works (curated by Alessandro Rabottini and Leonardo Bigazzi).
