The Public Art Agency Sweden has released an open call for artists to develop a semipermanent digital project. The art programme Liquid Interfaces: Open/Closed Gateways is related to the renovation and construction of Gothenburg University’s Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts in Gothenburg.
The underlying idea is that colocation of different artistic educations in the same building will strengthen collaboration between the faculty’s departments and facilitate new fusions, artistic expressions, and social interactions. Moreover, this venue has the ambition to become a central public space in Gothenburg, where anyone can meet to exchange knowledge and experience art.
Taking as its starting point the prospect of interdisciplinary collaboration, new connections and lowered thresholds, the focus of the curatorial vision Liquid Interfaces: Open/Closed Gateways provides a ground for critical encounters regarding orders, thresholds, and passages. Various types of more or less defined boundaries are a constant presence in the public sphere, whether they are physical or not. Interfaces are fluidly connecting different worlds, fluctuating between openness and closedness.
While the new building is being built, an opportunity is given through the digital art project to challenge terms such as thresholds, boundaries, and interfaces and to explore visions of interdisciplinarity, interaction and collaboration. The digital art project can be integrated within the multifaceted environment of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg and deepen an understanding of and even challenge various forms of connections.
Following Swedish regulations, the procurement of an artist is organised through an open call. The first step is a call for registrations where applicants are requested to submit a notification of interest. Among the received notification of interests, two to three artists/artist collectives will then be appointed and commissioned to develop a proposal. Finally, among the two to three proposals for artistic intervention, one artist/artist collective will be awarded an art-project contract for the digital art project.
The remuneration for developing a proposal is 80,000 SEK excluding VAT for each of the two to three appointed artists/artist collectives. The budget frame for the implementation of the proposal is 2,000,000 SEK, excluding VAT (awarded to one artist/artist collective).
Notifications of interest must be submitted no later than May 21, 2023 (by 11:59pm CEST).
