Brazilian Association of Contemporary Art Galleries (ABACT)
Latitude—Platform for Brazilian Art Galleries Abroad, a partnership between the Brazilian Association of Contemporary Art (ABACT) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), is pleased to announce that its member galleries (Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel, Luisa Strina, Mendes Wood DM, Mitre and Vermelho) will be part of the group of exhibitors from 27 countries which feature at Frieze New York 2023, from May 17–21, at the cultural institution The Shed.
Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel brings together a selection of works by Iran do Espírito Santo, Lucia Laguna, Jac Leirner and Mauro Restiffe that set off an investigation on windows, in both their physical and conceptual dimensions. Going beyond the classic art historical notion of the artwork as a window to the world, Iran do Espírito Santo and Mauro Restiffe emphasize reflections and mirroring as obstacles to visibility, challenging preconceived notions of spatial representation. In contrast, Lucia Laguna operates in the realm of the visible, painting the changing landscape she sees from the window of her studio in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro, which she then juxtaposes with fragments of art monographs and other elements from her imagination. Further unfolding the analogy, Jac Leirner’s collections and compositions of everyday objects offer a view of her habits, compulsions and procedures.
Galeria Luisa Strina presents a group of artists from different generations whose works are notable to its story. The project also seeks to emphasize the increasingly influential role played by women artists in recent years, such as Leonor Antunes, Fernanda Gomes, and Anna Maria Maiolino. The works by the Brazilians Alexandre da Cunha, Bruno Baptistelli, Cildo Meireles, Cinthia Marcelle, Clarissa Tossin, Marepe, Panmela Castro, Renata Lucas, Tonico Lemos Auad, among other international names are also featuring in the artists selection for the fair.
Making its debut at Frieze New York, Mitre Gallery proposes a solo project by Marcos Siqueira, an artist who has always lived in Serra do Cipó, in the state of Minas Gerais, working directly with the soil, researching its natural phenomena, and directly involved in environmental preservation practices. The energy and elements that are part of his territory can be found in his work, as well as the uniqueness of the horizon, the plants, the animals, the people, the festivities, the work activities, the plays, and the subjective dynamics of nature and people’s transformation.
Vermelho, on the other hand, features a selection of works by Claudia Andujar, Rosângela Rennó, Edgard de Souza, Ivan Argote, and Monica Nador + Jamac. The presentation focuses on the multiple and varied techniques explored by the group of artists, including photography, embroidery, textiles, serigraphy and collage.
Joining the Brazilian galleries team in New York’s art circuit, Nara Roesler Gallery participated in TEFAF New York 2023, which took place from May 11 to 16, and presented a selection of works by a group of mid-twentieth century landmark abstract masters: Tomie Ohtake, Lygia Pape, Abraham Palatnik, Heinz Mack and Sergio Camargo. Eclectic in their take on abstraction, all these artists stood out within their contexts for their innovation, ingenuity and unorthodox practice.
