Who receives one of Europe’s biggest art awards? On April 22, the prestigious exhibition opens with brand new works from each of the four nominated artists.
Ahmed Umar, who is having great success with the exhibition Glowing Phalanges at Kunstnernes Hus (Oslo) this spring, is turning the exhibition space into a traditional Sudanese wedding room. In a performance, Umar himself figures as a bride in a wedding ritual which in Sudan is strictly reserved for women. Joar Nango shows an ironic ode to Scandinavian interior and lamp design in collaboration with the Romani coppersmith Lajos Gabor. In a performative and sculptural work, Anna Daniell recreates Noah’s Ark based on art. What do we take with us, what do we leave behind, must everything be archived and who is the captain? Ane Graff combines knowledge from art, philosophy and science in an investigation of materiality, with her characteristic use of cast glass.
The Lorck Schive Kunstpris is often referred to as the artists’ prize for artists. The award and the nomination process are unique in their context.
“Those who nominate work as artists, curators or critics. The jury members are artists and curators, and the board of the Christian Lorck Schive and Spouse Trust also consists of visual artists. It should be the art that speaks,” says Johan Börjesson, director of Trondheim kunstmuseum.
The four nominated artists receive 150,000 NOK each to produce works for the exhibition, while the price itself is 500,000 NOK. The prize will be awarded on September 2, 2023 at Trondheim kunstmuseum.
This year’s jury consists of curators Diana Campbell and Binna Choi, and artist Camille Norment.
Previously, the artists Lene Berg and Marianne Heier (2013), Vanessa Baird (2015), Vibeke Tandberg (2017), Eline Mugaas (2019) and Steinar Haga Kristensen (2021) have received the award.
The prize is a collaboration between Christian Lorck Schive and Spouse Trust and Trondheim kunstmuseum.
