For its twentieth anniversary, the HMKV will focus on its sustained commitment to artistic training and education–an important aspect of its history–by launching a new format. The first Autocenter Summer Academy (ACSA) at HMKV will be organised in close collaboration with the Berlin-based project space Autocenter, which has been successfully hosting summer academies in its venue since 2009.
ASCA 2016 at HMKV is a unique opportunity to meet and exchange with exciting artists, critics and curators. ACSA @HMKV will be hosted for the first time in Dortmund, Germany. The two-week program consists of six courses by internationally renowned artists: Heidi Specker (Berlin/Leipzig), DIS (New York), Carl Michael von Hausswolff (Stockholm), Tobias Zielony (Berlin), Brendan Howell (Berlin), Thibaut de Ruyter (Berlin), plus many lectures & workshops—by Dan Perjovschi (Sibiu), Suzanne Treister (London), Kito Nedo (Berlin), Armen Avanessian (Berlin), Kolja Reichert (Berlin/Frankfurt am Main), Markus Ambach (Düsseldorf), a.o.—and excursions into the Ruhr area.
This year’s program again offers the participants a rich combination of practical and theoretical knowledge. A unique atmosphere allows for an intensive exchange with renowned international experts drawn from all fields of contemporary art (photography, drawing, painting, media, post internet art, electronic music, art criticism, curating). In addition, ASCA 2016 at HMKV’s lecture programme will provide insights into contemporary discourse.
For ACSA 2016 at HMKV, a comprehensive two-week program has been created. Participants can choose how long they wish to attend (one or two weeks), and select from different week-long courses designed and run by internationally acclaimed artists. Each course has a maximum of 15 participants, which will give each student the opportunity to develop their artistic practice and theory over the course of the week. The course is set up to allow each student the maximum ability to discuss and exchange with their teacher and the other participants—while at the same time exploring the region and its amazing industrial heritage.
In addition to the set course, each week’s schedule includes two lectures and an excursion led by expert journalists, and curators. At the end of every week on Saturday evening a public presentation will be held in the HMKV exhibition space at the Dortmunder U.
This year again we are adding a one-week hands-on curating class. Architect, curator, and art critic Thibaut de Ruyter will run it again after its big success in 2015. Together, with up to 12 participants, he will focus on the actual process of exhibition making.
Please visit www.autocenter-summeracademy.de for more information on each week’s program, including a brief introduction to the course leaders and lecturers participating in ASCA 2016 at HMKV.
