UNIDEE Residency Programs is delighted to announce the curatorial framework for the 2023/24 cycle of UNIDEE Residency Modules, curated by new Visiting Curator Chiara Cartuccia.
With the title “Neither on Land nor at Sea. Meeting by the Mediterranean Im/Possible”, the upcoming residency programme frames the Mediterranean informing its curatorial arguments as a non-theme. During the moments of aggregation offered by the residency formats, the project will move across shared conversations and actions, exchanged knowledges and understandings, with the goal to trouble the singular imagination of the Mediterranean, and so to attempt making spaces of possibility out of unresolved and unresolvable territories.
Neither on Land nor at Sea invites to meander around unreducible complications and on shifting grounds, to explore ways in which geography is historically, socially, and politically produced, to dig up and talk about the mental images we carry with us, which create space and, with it, its contrasting meanings. In the framework of the expansive working process that will unfold in the next two years, the Mediterranean will be treated as an opportunity to think of our present times geographically, across intertwined histories and overlapping territories, via the exploration of some of the experiences and imaginations that inhabit and traverse them. The project pluralises Mediterranean concepts/spaces as sites of worldmaking and experimentation in communal living. To do so, it adopts un-grounded geographies and colliding historicities not as objects of analysis, but as meeting places, in which to congregate to elaborate on the role played by situated practices and shared processes in the promotion of social transformations, towards epistemic justice.
The first open call for participation in the Spring and Summer modules will be published in March 2023.
Neither on Land nor at Sea is curated by 2023/24 UNIDEE Visiting Curator, Chiara Cartuccia. Appointed in Autumn 2022, she brings to UNIDEE extensive experience in curating discursive and performative programming in collaborative settings, and a strong research-grounded approach. She previously held curatorial positions at SAVVY Contemporary and Manifesta Biennial, and she is the co-founder and director of the curatorial platform EX NUNC. Chiara Cartuccia is currently engaged in long-term curatorial research on the Mediterranean as imagined/imaginative geography, focusing on the ramifications of practical Mediterraneanism(s) in the working and thinking of art institutions operating within Euro-Mediterranean contexts.
About UNIDEE
In 1999 Michelangelo Pistoletto founded Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto’s programme of artists’ residencies for art and social transformation. The objective of the programme was to provide the participants with the inspiration, motivation and instruments to activate, develop or strengthen artistic initiatives based on the involvement of local ecologies. UNIDEE-University of Ideas started as an international programme of 4-month residencies (1999-2013), to then evolve this model focusing on season long research themes and developing four types of residency of different durations and with different objectives, grouped under the general heading of UNIDEE Residency Programs: UNIDEE Modules, Research Residency, Connective Residency and Organisations in Residency.
