The New Centre has inaugurated a new program titled History, Design, & Worldmaking, directed by Thomas Moynihan to replace our Post-Planetary Universal Design Program. The new program extends our long-established interest in architecture and design theory, combining it with a necessary focus on the broader technological implications of long-term worldmaking.

In the past season, we introduced our inaugural writing workshop by Ross McElwain and Shiona Tregaskis. Building on the need for skill-based workshops in the humanities, we’ve programmed another workshop titled “Prompt-Writing Workshop: Hybrid Intelligence, Generative AI & Human Cognition” by Berlin-based artists and designers Jumoke Fernandez & Sebastian Zimmerhackl. The workshop will feature several guests including Jon Raffman, Joao Enxuto, Romulo Moraes, and others who have been experimenting with these new emerging tools. This season, we are also offering two other workshops, titled “Documentary Practice Workshop: Between Verification & Construction” by Manuel Correa and “Publishing Workshop: Methodologies for Writing & Dissemination” by the critic Maria Ines Plaza Lazo, founder and publisher of the Berlin-based street newspaper Arts of the Working Class

In June, The New Centre organized an online/in person hybrid roundtable in collaboration with ESAP (Escola Superior Artística do Porto), titled ChatGPT, Language and The Future of Thinking & Writing. This roundtable is available on our YouTube channel for public viewing. It featured presentations by Elie Ayache, AA Cavia, João Oliveira Duarte, Joao Enxuto & Erica Love, Anna Longo, Rafael Moscardi, Reza Negarestani and Mohammad Salemy. The proceedings of the roundtable will be published in early 2024.

We also would like to Welcome Eduarda Neves to The New Centre’s Board of Advisors. Neves is an internationally well-known curator, and critic. She holds a degree in Philosophy and a PhD in Aesthetics. She is currently the director of ESAP (Escola Superior Artística do Porto).

Following the success of our 2022 theory residency with Machines Seeking Connections (MSC) in New York which featured our Researchers Artemis Papachristou and Cássia Siqueira, in 2024, we will offer new MSC residencies to our interested Researchers.

As we approach our tenth anniversary next year, we are deepening our commitments to parallel academia. We will be reshaping our research initiatives together with our Programmers, in particular launching an uniquely discreet transdisciplinary program of Night School within The New Centre in the upcoming Season.

We also want to acknowledge those within our network who have been recognized for their works: Katherine C. M. Adams for her latest reviews for e-flux Criticism, Nicholas von Kleist for producing IMMATERIAL VOL. 6, the official performance program of the Material Art Fair, and Carl Olsson for the publication of his his long-form essay “Peak Face” on the Urbanomic platform.
