E-WERK Luckenwalde presents BURN OUT, a weekend of talks, events and live music seeking to address climate and capitalism, de-growth, and environmental imperialism. The symposium, open to all, and taking place on July 1 and 2, 2023, is all about driving change in the realms of economy, humanitarianism, and ecology. BURN OUT is part of a series of symposiums at E-WERK and LUMA Arles, Rupert Centre for Art and Education in collaboration Gallery Climate Coalition on human and planetary sustainability.
Join to hear from international artists, curators, economists, architectural scientists, anthropologists, political geographers, conservators, and activists alongside a range of performers and musicians who will perform across the weekend.
Speakers and performers include Anthropologist Elizabeth Povinelli, Political Geographer Sinthujan Varatharajan, Conservator Kim Kraczon, Architect Mae-ling Lokko, Artistic Director of Atelier LUMA Jan Boelen, Philosopher Byung-Chul Han and Educator Giulia Bellinetti amidst music by Valentina Magaletti, Coby Sey, Jozef Van Wissem, FM Einheit as well as more guests to be announced. During BURN OUT presenters will share their research on topics such as climate and capitalism, de-growth, and environmental imperialism. They will address critical questions, including what does institutional de-growth look like and what are it’s limits? How can we enact prevent environmental imperialism and enact radical care at local and global level to rectify historical exploitations? Performances will be splintered throughout the programme to create pockets of non-didactic reflection to champion art as an equally valuable form of knowledge transmission. Presentations will be conducted in both German and English, with live translation available.

BURN OUT is part of the sustainable institution; an international symposium series, artist in residency programme and digital toolkit specifically focused on institutional sustainability, in partnership with LUMA Arles and Rupert centre for art, residencies and education.

the sustainable institution artist residency is an opportunity for creative practitioners to produce new solutions in the fight against climate change and mitigate the environmental burden of exhibition making. Three creative practitioners will be selected to develop a prototype for sustainable exhibition making with a grant of 20.000 EUR. Each successful applicant will be mentored by the jury over a six month research and development period, with a studio at their respective institution between March–April 2024.
The jury includes Jan Boelen (Atelier LUMA, Artistic Director) Mae-ling Lokko (Architectural scientist, Educator and Designer), Kim Kraczon (Director of Materials at Ki Culture, Advisor at Gallery Climate Coalition), Lucia Pietroiusti (Curator), Asad Raza (Artist), Viktorija Šiaulytė (Rupert, Director) and Helen Turner (E-WERK Luckenwalde, Artistic Director and Chief Curator).
