March 16–April 22, 2023
David Zwirner is pleased to announce the gallery’s first solo exhibition with Gerhard Richter, opening tonight from 6–8 pm at 537 West 20th Street, New York. This presentation will be the first New York exhibition devoted to the artist’s work since his retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, briefly on view in March 2020.
On view will be a significant group of Richter’s “last paintings,” made in 2016–17; many of these abstract oil paintings will be shown here for the first time. Also featured will be a new glass installation that continues Richter’s exploration of human perception and the built environment. An expansive suite of new works on paper from 2021–22 will also be on view, alongside works related to the artist’s mood series of colored ink sketches.

This exhibition will coincide with the publication of Gerhard Richter: 100 Abstract Pictures, a new artist’s book created by Richter that explores abstraction and chance in art and writing. An artwork of its own, the book will be exclusively available at the gallery during the run of the show, online, and at the gallery’s 535 West 20th Street pop-up bookstore.
“The 100 Abstract Pictures shown here originated about five years ago, when I poured enamel paints on a fifty-by-fifty centimeter glass plate. The paints then flowed into one another without completely mixing. Thus they produced countless ephemeral abstract pictures, which I captured in photographs,” said Gerhard Richter.
