Call for proposals: practice-based research in Sweden
Application deadline: February 12, 2023, 11:59pm
Power of Places is a call for proposals to develop methods for urban development that utilise, gently develop, and strengthen local values. If we focus on place—making use of existing materials, opportunities, and local expertise—what type of development and aesthetic could emerge?
The call aims to demonstrate what a community-based and resourceful urban development could be. The project focuses on two areas in the Swedish city of Malmö that have different geographies, conditions, and needs: Rosengård and Nyhamnen. The former is a large residential area constructed in the 1960s and 70s and has a younger demographic than the city’s average. The latter is a dockland area that is about to be comprehensively developed into a new district of predominantly housing and office space.
Two interdisciplinary teams will be selected and tasked with analysing each site, investigating ways of working and, ultimately, proposing full-scale prototypes that exemplify new approaches for Rosengård and Nyhamnen. The methods established through this work will support the City of Malmö’s long term work in the areas and beyond.
Learn more and apply before February 12, 2023.
Information
Commencing in March and concluding in December 2023, each selected team will be offered a fee of 500,000 SEK (approximately 45,000 USD). In addition, the teams will each have access to a production budget of 850,000 SEK (approximately 80,000 USD). ArkDes and the City of Malmö encourage the teams to spend as much time as possible in Rosengård and Nyhamnen, and workspaces will be available for each team throughout the project.

About practice-based research at ArkDes
Practice-based research at ArkDes (ThinkTank) seeks to push the limits of how public space and future cities are imagined and created. Projects are developed in collaboration with private and public stakeholders, alongside communities and experts, and are focused on being explorative and multidisciplinary. Knowledge production takes place locally, where creative teams work on specific cases. In Visioner i Norr, teams have been tasked with supporting Swedish municipalities in handling extreme growth in population to create sustainable, livable urban landscapes. In Street Moves, teams have been developing the concept of the “one-minute-city” through prototyping temporary changes to the streetscape.
Power of Places is a collaboration between ArkDes, the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design, and the City of Malmö, with support from Malmö Förskönings—och Planteringsförening.
