HDK-Valand – Academy of Art and Design, University of Gothenburg (Sweden), together with L’Internationale confederation of European museums and the National College of Art and Design (Ireland), wish to appoint a researcher who will work as managing editor and research responsible for L’Internationale Online (L’IO) platform. The role coordinates, both practically and strategically, a lively platform for disseminating research and critical commentary on art, culture and society.
The position is linked to the four year programme “Museum of the Commons” (MoC) and appointed as a researcher at HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg for the duration.
HDK-Valand undertakes research and education in design, film, photography, fine art, craft, literary composition and pedagogy in an outward looking and international environment. Context
This new position is linked to the four-year programme “Museum of the Commons” (MoC) and the person appointed as a researcher at HDK-Valand will be placed as Managing Editor and Research Responsible for the duration of the “Museum of the Commons” project.
L’Internationale is a confederation that brings together seven major European art institutions: MG+MSUM (Ljubljana, Slovenia); Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid, Spain); MACBA (Barcelona, Spain); M HKA, (Antwerp, Belgium); MSN (Warsaw, Poland), SALT (Istanbul, Turkiye) and Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven, the Netherlands).
The confederation takes its name from the workers’ anthem “L’Internationale”, which calls for an equitable and democratic society with reference to the historical labour movement. The ethics of L’Internationale are based on the values of difference and antagonism, solidarity and commonality. L’Internationale also serves as an apparatus for making visible the standardisation of individual and collective beings, and defends the critical imagination of art as a catalyst for concepts of the civic institution, citizenship and democracy.
For the “Museum of the Commons” programme, L’Internationale is working together with HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg (Gothenburg, Sweden); National College of Art & Design with the Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin, Ireland); Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Arts and Sciences (Ljubljana, SIovenia); Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin, Germany); Tranzit (Bucharest, Romania); Institute of Radical Imagination (Naples, Italy) and Visual Culture Research Centre (Kyiv, Ukraine). L’Internationale Online editorial board is formed by representatives from the “Museum of the Commons” partners.
Duties
The person appointed will through liaison with the MoC partners: work closely with the editorial board to scope and implement the editorial mission and plan of L’IO for the next four years; develop and implement a structure and schedule for content commissioning and publishing (online platform, ePubs, and other editorial and artistic projects). Qualifications
Good communication, ability to work collaboratively, professionalism and flexibility are very important skill, placing a large emphasis on personal suitability for this position. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated knowledge of contemporary art practice and theory and be able to frame a global perspective on questions of contemporary European cultural politics. Employment
Appointment starts: May 1, 2023 or as soon as agreed. Employment category: Researcher. Employment tasks: Managing editor and research responsible for L’Internationale Online within the EACEA funded “Museum of the Commons” project (2023–27). The employment is part-time (80 percent) and is placed at HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg. Salaries are set individually at the University. (Indicative salary: 40,000 SEK monthly)
