Created by Base Proyectos + Archipiélago, Salon ACME is an art platform created by and for artists, which seeks to give visibility and impulse to artists that develop their work both in Mexico and abroad. This year it will celebrate its 10th anniversary during the art week in February at its usual venue Proyecto Public Prim.
For the last decade, Salón ACME has shown a variety of projects especially by young and mid-career artists and curators, becoming one of the main platforms in Mexico and Latin America for emergent art. This year, the open call section will feature 75 artists from all over the world, who were selected by a Curatorial Board composed of curators, established artists, and other relevant practitioners in the field.
Along with the emergent art, the Salón features the Bodega ACME, a section that gives continuity to the work of artists who have participated in previous editions to follow the artists’ development. This year the exhibition A fashionable crowd lurching towards the eclipse will be curated by Gaby Cepeda and will tackle issues around the relationship between art objects and fashion. Additionally, there’s another curated exhibition that belongs to the section Guest State, which seeks to make visible the work of artists from different contexts around the country. An appointed curator, knowledgeable about the artistic production of a specific region, makes an exhibition including the work of local artists. This year the Guest State will be Mexico City; the place where it all began and where the last ten editions have been celebrated. Curated by Fabiola Iza, the exhibition Nadie, nadie creerá el incendio si el humo no da señales [No one, no one will believe the fire without smoke signals] brings together works by artists who question the notions of landscape that emerge from colonial, patriarchal, and anthropocentric systems.
Our section Guest Projects, once again curated by Ana Castella, will feature 32 solo shows presented by galleries from different countries where hybrid formats, peculiar materials, and immersive environments predominate.
Since 2017, we inaugurated a section called Patio, which consists of a huge commission for our central courtyard. For our 10th edition, Isla Flotante and Travesía Cuatro will present Mariela Scafati with a large installation with several panels of paintings floating around the space. This year we will continue with our Editorial Room curated by Oscar Benassini, which will focus on contemporary artists’ books, independent editorial publishing houses, and rare editions.
Salón ACME Prize this year consists of a one-month residency at HANGAR – Centro de Investigação Artística, Lisbon in Portugal. Selected artists will be announced during our preview.
Salón ACME it’s thrilled to persist in its mission of promoting the art scene in Mexico City. You can find your tickets here. @salonacme / #SalonAcme / #SalonAcme10 / #SalonACME2023.
