Isaac Julien: PLAYTIME
Works from the Wemhöner Collection
March 8–July 10, 2023
In 2014, five years after the world has been convulsed by a global banking and financial crisis, Isaac Julien premiered his film Playtime to address an important question: can capital be rendered visible?
By following the stories of six protagonists—interconnecting figures in the world of art and finance—Isaac Julien subsequently found narrative images for the process of capital interlocking at a global level, intertwining a macroscopic and a microscopic perspective dialectically, as it were.
The Palais Populaire and the Wemhöner Collection have joined forces to shed new light on Playtime from today’s perspective and to testify to the work’s topicality, as capital as a medium plays into almost all political, social and societal issues and influences the lives of nearly every human being on this planet.

The Struggle of Memory
Deutsche Bank Collection
Part 1: April 18–October 3, 2023
Part 2: October 20, 2023–March 11, 2024
“A tangled, murky zone where fantasy and images, desire and loss, and wit and guilt reside” is how the American conceptual artist Robert Morris once described memory. This heady mix is what you can expect to find in the upcoming exhibition predominantly drawn from the Deutsche Bank Collection. Curated by Kerryn Greenberg, this exhibition will be on view in two successive parts, the first opening in Spring 2023 and the second in Autumn 2023.
The Struggle of Memory responds to the acquisitions Deutsche Bank has made over the past decade, many of which are by artists from Africa and/or are of African descent. This is one of the legacies of the Nigerian curator Okwui Enwezor, director of the groundbreaking documenta 11 and long-standing member of Deutsche Bank’s Global Art Advisory Council, who passed away in 2019.
By focusing on personal narratives, alternative perspectives and lesser-known stories, this exhibition seeks to identify the unstable, exploit the slippages, and make clear that the struggle against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting.
The artists include Sammy Baloji, Yto Barrada, Mohamed Camara, Samuel Fosso, Anawana Haloba, Lubaina Himid, Lebohang Kganye, Wangechi Mutu, Paulo Nazareth, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Jo Ractliffe, Berni Searle, Dineo Seshee Bopape, Mikhael Subotzky, Kara Walker, Alberta Whittle, and Hoy Cheong Wong.
Kerryn Greenberg is the Associate Curator for the upcoming 14th Gwangju Biennale and co-Director of New Curators.
Leben in Bildern. Ein Portrait des Sehens
July 29–August 14, 2024
In a dialectical reflection on art, the exhibition traces the various stages of a human life.
Works from different periods of origin are placed in intriguing dialogues, on the basis of which conclusions can be drawn about the existential themes of human beings. Leben in Bildern. Ein Portrait des Sehens—an exhibition for Rudolf Zwirner, on the occasion of his 90th birthday—is a plea for art to be understood as an essential part of the human condition.
Curated by Philipp Bollmann and Michael Müller.
La Chola Poblete
Deutsche Bank “Artist of the Year” 2023
September 6, 2023–February 5, 2024
La Chola Poblete has been named Deutsche Bank’s “Artist of the Year” for 2023. The Argentinian critically examines the consequences of colonialism and white supremacy. In paintings, watercolors, sculptures, and performances, she reflects on her indigenous and queer roots and opposes the stereotyping and exoticization of indigenous peoples. La Chola Poblete will present her first solo exhibition in Europe at the PalaisPopulaire. The award “Artist of the Year” is given at the recommendation of the Deutsche Bank Global Art Advisory Council, consisting of the renowned curators Hou Hanru, Udo Kittelmann and Victoria Noorthoorn.
