The Drawing Triennial 2023—All that Lies Between takes place at four locations: Tegnerforbundet—The Norwegian Drawing Center, the National Museum, Tenthaus and Deichman Bjørvika. 63 national and international artists participate in this year’s triennial, focused on two of the most historically important forms of human communication—drawing and text.
The Drawing Triennial 2023 examines the relationship between the written and drawn, the said and unsaid, and everything in between. The curatorial group poses several questions about drawing and text: Can drawing be understood as a separate language? Are there things that can exclusively be expressed through drawings, or words? What happens in the brain when viewing a drawing, versus reading a text? Is this experience unique to each individual, or do patterns bind us together? What is an abstract text, and what meanings can it contain? What determines whether an idea, a feeling or an experience becomes a text or drawing?
The triennial is a collaboration between four actors in the field of drawing, text and art, that will illuminate the theme in their own way:
Tegnerforbundet—The Norwegian Drawing Center, owner and organizer of the Drawing Triennial, was founded in 1916 and is Norway’s only center for drawing. Tegnerforbundet works to show the breadth of drawing and to promote the discourse around drawing as an art form. Since 2002, Tegnerforbundet has organized the Drawing Triennial (formerly biennial), an arena for the display and dissemination of contemporary drawing-based art.
The National Museum owns Norway’s largest collections of art, architecture and design. The new National Museum, completed in the summer of 2022, unites what was previously the National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, making it the largest art museum in the Nordic region.
Tenthaus, an international art collective founded in 2009, is characterized by an open, process-oriented form of participation and collaboration. Tenthaus encompasses both a project room, an exhibition space, a mobile studio, and a wide range of curatorial projects.
Deichman Bjørvika is Oslo’s main library, and Norway’s oldest and largest public library. Completed in June 2020, it won the title of the world’s best public library in 2021.
The Drawing Triennial 2023 includes a rich dissemination program, titled Inbetween, that takes place at the four exhibition locations, creating an activating framework around the triennial’s theme.
The Drawing Triennial is made up of the following exhibitions:
