March 29–April 2, 2023
This year SP-Arte takes place at a time when Brazil re-positions itself culturally both locally and globally. The fair is a major driving force behind the revitalization and renewal of the art market in the country.
Brazilian art is in the international spotlight. Adriano Pedrosa, MASP’s artistic director, has been appointed the curator of the 2024 Venice Biennale. He is the first professional from the Southern Hemisphere to hold this position.
The diversity and plurality present in Brazil’s artistic production adds great value to the international cultural scene, exemplified by the solo and group shows by Brazilian artists around the world. The Shed (NYC) is showing Claudia Andujar’s anthropological photographs of the Yanomami people in the exhibition The Yanomami Struggle that has already traveled through São Paulo, Paris and London. Ateneo de Madrid is currently presenting Assum Preto, a solo exhibition by Lucas Arruda who recently had his sold-out show at David Zwirner, Paris. Meanwhile, Maxwell Alexandre presents his individual exhibition at La Casa Encendida also in Spain.
SP-Arte will present works by established as well as emerging and self-taught artists in its 19th edition, happening from March 29 to April 2 at the iconic Bienal Pavilion designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The fair promotes the largest encounter of Latin American art and design. In joining works from historic masters and emerging artists, the event continues to be a reference for the artworld, with the objective of continually expanding its local and global presence.
The fair hosts both international and Brazilian galleries, including heavyweights such as Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel, Luisa Strina and Mendes Wood DM as well as young promising galleries like Galatea, Central, Quadra, HOA and Verve. In addition, the fair’s design sector has grown 30 percent in relation to previous editions. New initiatives such as the expansion of the fair’s VIP program and inauguration of a Collector’s Lounge for guests contribute to enhancing guest experience.
This year the fair also launches its proprietary app, where users can easily access information about the main event, complete VIP programming in addition to the exhibition openings around the city.
On the eve of celebrating 20 years dedicated to visual arts in Brazil, SP-Arte expands its activities by lauching Casa SP-Arte, a permanent space to host exhibitions of historic and emerging artists, represented by national and international galleries. The place will also serve as a venue for talks and courses on the art market.
