2001–2022
September 30, 2023–April 7, 2024
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago announces the exhibition Rebecca Morris: 2001–2022, organized by Manilow Senior Curator Jamillah James, on view from September 30, 2023, through April 7, 2024, in the Bergman Family Gallery.
Rebecca Morris: 2001–2022 is a 21-year survey of Los Angeles–based painter Rebecca Morris (b. 1969, Honolulu, HI; lives and works in Los Angeles), an artist known for her large-scale paintings and inventive approach to composition, color, and gesture. Her first major museum survey since 2005, the exhibition is an examination of the artist’s innumerable contributions to the field of painting and contemporary art.
With 27 works, the exhibition provides audiences with an opportunity to see the artist’s progression of style and development of several formal tendencies and motifs, resulting in a distinct and recognizable visual language. Morris’s dynamic paintings push against the historical foundation of her chosen medium and for the constantly evolving and expanding field of painting today.
Rebecca Morris: 2001–2022 is organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA). The exhibition is curated by Jamillah James, Manilow Senior Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and former Senior Curator, ICA LA, with Caroline Ellen Liou, Curatorial Assistant. The presentation at the MCA is organized by James with Jack Schneider, Assistant Curator.
