The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program proudly announces its fellows for 2023, outstanding practitioners in the fields of visual arts, film, music and sound, and literature.
The DAAD fellows will reside in Berlin for up to one year to work on projects relevant to their trajectories as artists and engage in collaborations in the city.
The 2023 fellows include visual artists Esvin Alarcón Lam, Sam Vernon, Jiyoung Yoon, Helena Uambembe; filmmakers Gustavo Vinagre, Susana de Sousa Dias, Radu Jude; composers/sound artists Ting-Jung Chen, Pisitakun Kuantalaeng, Muqata’a, Sonja Mutić; and writers Lana Bastašić, Amanda Lee Koe, Rajesh Parameswaran, Kinga Tóth, Cristina Rivera Garza, Nhã Thuyên.
The 2023 fellows will overlap with those 2022 artists-in-residence still in town: visual artists Patricia Belli, MADEYOULOOK (Molemo Moiloa & Nare Mokgotho), Tuli Mekondjo, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, and Zoncy Heavenly; filmmaker Shireen Seno; writers Anuk Arudpragasam, Jay Bernard, Volha Hapeyeva, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, Maaza Mengiste and Faruk Šehić; and composers/sound artists Merche Blasco, Nandita Kumar, Elaine Mitchener, and Bárbara Lázara.
Established in 1963, the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program is one of the most renowned residency programs for international cultural practitioners. Its versatile venue, the daadgalerie located in Berlin-Kreuzberg, operates both as a site for presenting exhibitions as well as concerts, readings, talks, and screenings, allowing artists to test out their ideas and imaginations.
In 2023, the public program kicks off with a sound installation by Nandita Kumar, a 2022 music and sound fellow of the Artists-in-Berlin Program. Kumar’s work From Paradigm to Paradigm, Into the Biomic Time is playfully reminiscent of a newspaper-press, stuck in an eternal loop. The project comments on the constant regurgitation of misinformed and manipulative facts by individuals and organizations as they influence public opinion to protect their own interests.
Further projects are planned with filmmakers Shireen Seno and Burak Çevik, visual artist Saba Innab, and writer Tom McCarthy, among other current and former fellows. Interdisciplinary event series, screenings, publications, and readings will provide insight into the artistic endeavors developed during the fellows’ residencies in Berlin.
Opening in September 2023 is the exhibition If the Berlin Wind Blows My Flag. Art and Internationalism Before the Fall of the Berlin Wall featuring contributions by Agnes Denes, Braco Dimitrijević, Joan La Barbara, Wolf Kahlen, Milan Knížák, Maria Lassnig, Ann Noël, Sonya Schönberger, Endre Tót, Charles Simonds, Maija Tabaka, Yvonne Rainer, Alicja Rogalska, among others.
The project is co-organized by Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) and the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program / daadgalerie in cooperation with Akademie der Künste and Galerie im Körnerpark and funded by Hauptstadtkulturfonds.
DAAD Artists-in-Berlin program partners include Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Arsenal—Institute for Film and Video Art, internationales literaturfestival berlin, Radialsystem, as well as the CTM and MaerzMusik festivals. The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program has joined the city of Berlin’s initiative Weltoffenes Berlin, partnering with ICORN, the International Cities of Refuge Network, to provide artist-at-risk grants.
The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program is funded by the German Foreign Office and the Senate of Berlin.
