If the Berlin Wind Blows My Flag delves into the artistic scenes in West Berlin before the fall of the Berlin Wall, based on the history of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program. Launched in 1963, the residency program brought international artists to West Berlin as a signal against the “cultural isolation” of the city. An exhibition in three chapters—at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.), daadgalerie, and Galerie im Körnerpark—accompanied by events at Akademie der Künste examines the role of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program in nurturing artistic practices and networks during the Cold War and investigates the program’s cultural and political orientation.
The exhibition at n.b.k. focuses on key exhibitions and art movements of the 1970s and 1980s in Berlin, presented in dialogue with contemporary artists (Ieva Epnere, Kasia Fudakowski, Isaac Chong Wai). Through an examination of historical projects in public space (such as ADA—Aktionen der Avantgarde, Hotel Room Event, and actions by Daniel Buren, Endre Tót, and Milan Knížák), paintings by proponents of West Berlin Critical Realism (Bettina von Arnim, Maina-Miriam Munsky) and by Maija Tabaka from the former Soviet Union, and the international network connected to Jürgen Schweinebraden’s EP Galerie in East Berlin, the exhibition unravels the interplay of artistic movements within and beyond the borders of the divided city.
The exhibition If the Berlin Wind Blows My Flag is a project by Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) and the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program / daadgalerie in cooperation with Galerie im Körnerpark and Akademie der Künste, funded by Hauptstadtkulturfonds

John Knight: Evergreen, a work ex situ
September 14, 2023–September 1, 2024
Curator: André Rottmann
Since 2015, the facade of Neuer Berliner Kunstverein has been made available to artists once a year as a surface for exhibitions and interventions in the public space. Changing cyclically and conceived as long-term projects, the very different artistic approaches and themes offer new perspectives in n.b.k.’s immediate urban environment. For this year’s edition of the n.b.k. Facade project, US-American artist John Knight has been invited to consider a new work ex situ.

Dorothy Iannone: On the Continuing Journey
September 14, 2023–March 3, 2024
Curator: Lidiya Anastasova
Spanning six decades, Iannone’s body of work is characterized by her relentless pursuit of freedom and constant challenging of prevailing patriarchal norms. She championed equality and the free expression of love and sexuality—her candid depictions of human sexuality show the body as the focus of both personal and public negotiation of social taboos and power dynamics. Her work On the Continuing Journey, displayed on the n.b.k. Billboard, reflects her exploration of the ongoing processes of transformation inherent in life’s journey. This public display in Berlin serves as a tribute to the artist, who recently passed away.

Building on n.b.k.’s longstanding commitment to uphold the Uferhallen and marking a highlight of Berlin Art Week, n.b.k. and Uferhallen e. V. together with curators Isabelle Meiffert and Vincent Schier are orchestrating an extensive exhibition and event program, which will take place across this former industrial site, encompassing both its outdoor areas and inside halls and studios. A screening program featuring works from the n.b.k. Video-Forum explores themes of labor, commodification, and migration. Meanwhile, site-specific installations at the entrance gates and inside the large hall set the stage for the overall project, titled Frequently Asked Questions. Thematic tours of the Uferhallen and the surrounding neighborhood round out the program. During the weekend of September 16 and 17, a neighborhood festival and a diverse lineup of daytime activities, such as music, discussions, and open studios, invite visitors to fully experience and engage with the site.
