The Oslo National Academy of the Arts The Oslo National Academy of the Arts is the largest academic institution for artists and designers in Norway. It consists of six departments: the Academy of Dance, the Design department, the Academy of Fine Art, the Art and Craft department, the Academy of Opera and the Academy of Theatre.

The Art and Craft department offers art education within the disciplines of ceramics, textile art, print and drawing, metalwork and jewellery, and art and public spaces. The department has an experimental approach to workshop-based art practices.

We are a venue for collaborating and for developing strategies for medium- and material-based art and for art and public spaces. About the position
At the Art and Craft department, there is a vacancy for a 50 percent (0.5 FTE), six-year fixed-term position as a professor/associate professor at the Master of Art and Public Space programme. The departments programmes seek to incorporate both the discipline’s history as well as current trends in contemporary art.

The Art and Craft department seeks to explore and develop material-based art and also participate in contemporary discussions on art. In order to reinforce and develop synergies, these aspects will be essential to the position being filled.

The Art and Public Space programme trains artists at a high international level. Students learn to specialise in this discipline by for example working in the department’s workshops, contextualising and reflecting, activities that in tandem provide a basis for establishing an artistic practice within the field.

Art and public space
Recruiting students from a variety of artistic fields, the interdisciplinary Master of Art and Public Space programme lies in the intersection between art practice and art theory. The programme gives students the opportunity to explore the role of art in public spaces through their own artistic practices and in an international student environment. The core of the programme is related to developing and producing art projects in public spaces, as well as analysing and exploring art’s encounter with various types of public spaces, reception conditions and social structures.

The instruction at the Art and Public Space programme is in other words based on a wide range of artistic fields, even as the discipline’s incorporation in the Art and Craft department also entails that the programme enjoys a special relationship with workshop-based artistic practices. The programme is relevant for working as a professional artist in connection with public space, and it develops its courses in a dialogue with actors both within and outside of the field of art, and within both an international and a national perspective.

Tasks
The position involves artistic and educational responsibility and developing the discipline within a collegial discourse, with a focus on quality, renewal and reflection, as well as strengthening the discipline’s grounding within the Art and Craft department. An emphasis will therefore be placed on developing synergies and collaborations with the other academic communities at the department.

The work involves coordinating the disciplinary resources within the field, in addition to teaching, supervision and artistic or academic research. The successful applicant is expected to participate in the academic discourse on art and help raise the profile of the professional activities  within the discipline both nationally and internationally.

The position’s mandate includes teaching, supervision, artistic research, administration and some responsibility for financial matters. The successful applicant is expected to link their teaching to their own artistic and academic research. The immediate supervisor for the position is the dean, who has both the academic and the administrative responsibility for the department.
