The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Visual Arts, established in 1754, is a higher education institution offering all aspects of teaching within the field of contemporary art and its discourses.
The education consists of a three-year BFA general study program and a three-year MFA study programme with four specializations: Sculpture, Painting, Media Arts, Conceptual & Contextual Practices. More than ten workshops with extended facilities and lead by associate professors and craftspersons support the students’ artistic development with a wide range of technical, media and material based teaching. The Academy of Fine Arts has individual workshops within Ceramics, Construction, Wood, Plaster, 3D, Sustainable Materials, Graphic Arts, Painting & Colour, Photography, Video and Sound.
The objective of the study programmes is to develop the students’ artistic practice and prepare them for a subsequent career as professional artists. This is done through one-on-one tutorials, extensive instructions and teaching in technical, practical and theoretical aspects of art, and through collective discussions and critical analysis of the work done by fellow students and by other artists.
Managing one of Scandinavia’s largest spaces for contemporary art, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, this part of the institution has a natural interaction with the public through talk and exhibition programs, and each year in April and May the Kunsthalle houses the Academy’s MFA degree show.
There is a continuous influx of visiting local and international artists and guest teachers at the Academy of Fine Arts, providing new perspectives and knowledge in order to cover contemporary concerns.
The Academy of Fine Arts houses a number of PhD and postdoctoral students and offers courses within writing, art theory and artistic research. Artistic research, anchored in artistic practice, is a strategic priority and is monitored at the Academy of Fine Arts’ Laboratory for Art Research.
