The Sommerakademie Paul Klee (SPK) proudly announces the appointment of Andrea Thal as the new curator of the Sommerakademie’s two-year cycle 2023/24. Andrea Thal brings to the SPK extensive experience of curating, teaching and publishing, in which she combines an international perspective with the local context. Her engagement with social and political issues is frequently situated within a collaborative practice. From 2007 until 2014 she ran Les Complices, a self-organised space in Zurich. In 2011, she curated Chewing the Scenery, part of the Swiss participation in the 45th Venice Biennale. She has been an active member of Another Roadmap Africa Cluster (ARAC) since its foundation in 2015. Since 2014, Andrea Thal has been the artistic director of Contemporary Image Collective in Cairo, Egypt.
Up to eight residents are invited to join the SPK program, curated by artist Andrea Thal, and beginning 12 August 2023, in Bern, Switzerland. Over the course of 2023 & 2024, the SPK features public lectures, closed-door seminars, and access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and technical support at the Bern Academy of the Arts (HKB)—but also teaching opportunities in the form of workshops at the HKB.
The call for applications will be published on the SPK’s website early 2023.
About the Sommerakademie Paul Klee
Back in the 2000s, there were few examples of summer retreats as proposed by the former “Sommerakademie im Zentrum Paul Klee”. The program of the new Sommerakademie Paul Klee (SPK), which was reestablished in 2017, builds on this pioneering idea, while proposing a more complex blend of theory and practice, discourse, and production. With its atypical timeline and exceptional infrastructure, the SPK combines collective inquiry with the perks of production-oriented residencies. The SPK is a fully funded program, covering room, travel, and visa expenses. This in close partnership with international art institutions.
