In October 2022, the museum opened two new exhibitions: Jutta Koether: Black Place, which brings together several of Jutta Koether (Cologne, 1958)’s “black paintings.” From large-scale canvases, in which the artist reappropriates works by Botticelli or Rubens, to medium and small format works where Koether, influenced by DIY methodologies and punk, exceeds the limits of painting. The exhibition is curated by Beatriz Herráez (Director, Artium Museoa) and Catalina Lozano (Chief Curator, Artium Museoa).
The museum also presents The Rapture of Iván Zulueta, curated by Xabier Arakistain, based on a selection of titles by Iván Zulueta (San Sebastian, 1943-2009) from his experimental filmography of the 1970s, his work as a graphic artist, interviews with actors, filmmakers, musician with whom he was associated, and a wide array of documentation.
March sees the opening of Otros ejemplos recientes (Other Recent Examples), an exhibition by Alejandro Cesarco (b. 1975, Montevideo). Cesarco’s exhibition focuses on the different roles, uses and forms of pedagogy, and it will be presented alongside his parallel publishing practice. Otros ejemplos recientes is curated by Beatriz Herráez and produced in collaboration with Lumiar Cité/Maumaus, Lisbon.
March also marks the opening of a new reading of the museum’s collection with a new temporal framework, surveying art practices that emerged as new narratives of modernity in the 1950s, when artists such as Jorge Oteiza and Néstor Basterretxea returned from their travels in Latin America to embark on various artistic, political and pedagogical undertakings. It reaches our time with contemporary critical readings of those founding narratives. The curatorial team includes Sergio Rubira, Thomas Boutoux and the curators of the museum’s collection and documentation centre. Also working with the legacy of artists contained in the collection, the museum is presenting an exhibition by Rafael Lafuente (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1936–2005) curated by Enrique Martínez Goikoetxea that surveys his multifaceted production as a painter and graphic designer.
In June, the museum opens a solo exhibition by Julia Spínola (Madrid, 1979) that will gather both existing and new works exploring the complex notion of pleasure, mainly through her sculptural practice. The exhibition is co-produced in collaboration with CRAC Alsace, where it will travel in 2024, and is co-curated with Elfi Turpin (Director, CRAC Alsace). Also in June, aiming to expand the uses of Artium Museoa’s public space, the project Plazaratu explores new approaches to the urban and social environment of the institution. Plazaratu has two meanings in Basque: on the one hand, to go out / take to the square (Plaza) or to show oneself to the public, and on the other hand, to publish. With a programme curated in collaboration with the artist Itziar Okariz (San Sebastian, 1965), performance practices will play a major role in the museum’s programme during the summer.
Also in the summer months, Artium Museoa hosts JAI—Institute of Artistic Practices, a study programme based in Vitoria-Gasteiz and San Sebastian, which reaches its fourth edition in 2023. JAI acts as a space to exchange and disseminate artistic methodologies, with a committee formed by the artists Ibon Aranberri, Asier Mendizabal and Itziar Okariz, together with Oier Etxeberria and Catalina Lozano. The programme is co-organised with CICC Tabakalera.
Land of Friends, an exhibition by the Colombian artist Carolina Caycedo (London, 1979), will open in October 2023, including works that present her long-standing research on bodies of water, social movements associated with them and feminist struggles. The exhibition, curated by Catalina Lozano, is organised in collaboration with the BALTIC Art Centre (first staging of the exhibition curated by Irene Aristizábal) and the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern.
Continuing with Sala Z (zinema) its programme devoted to moving image practices, the museum is also presenting films by Mirari Echávarri (Pamplona, 1988) and Irati Gorostidi (Valle de Egües, 1988), Laida Lertxundi (Bilbao, 1981) and Mexican artist Naomi Rincón Gallardo (Raleigh, 1979).
Asserting its commitment to the practice of artists who have recently entered the museum’s collection, Artium Museoa will present two exhibitions by Sahatsa Jauregi (Salvador de Bahía, 1984) and Nerea Lekuona (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1976).
