In collaboration with world-renowned Cerámica Suro, SCAD debuts work by alumni artists at Design Miami/.
The Savannah College of Art and Design presents “SCAD at Miami”, a celebration of design innovation, contemporary art, and creative education, November 30—December 4, at Design Miami/. For this year’s fair, SCAD collaborates with internationally celebrated Mexican studio Cerámica Suro on vibrant collections of glazed tiles by SCAD alumni artists Nicolas Barrera (MArch; BFA, architecture, 2018), Lauren Clay (BFA, painting, 2004), Gonzalo Hernandez (MFA, fibers, 2019; MA, painting, 2018), Cory Imig (BFA, fibers, 2008), Abel Macias (BFA, illustration, 2002), and Nikita Nagpal (MFA, fibers, 2019).
Reflecting the artists’ unique creative visions, the tiles are showcased in a dramatic arched intervention by Barrera. The immersive installation, which also features new lighting and furniture designs by SCAD alum Marcelo Suro (BFA, industrial design, 2022), transforms over the course of the fair, with a different collection enlivening the space each day. SCAD at Miami embodies the university’s mission to provide opportunities for SCAD students and alumni to present their work on an international platform.
“Name a more iconic creative duo than Design Miami/ and SCAD,” says SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace. “This year’s SCAD at Miami promises striking contemporary designs, which animate an immersive installation that features a new SCAD artist each day of the fair. And don’t miss SCAD grad Marcelo Suro’s design brilliance. Wear your shades! These SCAD stars shine bright.”
As part of the collaboration, exhibiting alumni traveled to Guadalajara to create their collections with Cerámica Suro artisans. The esteemed ceramics studio, under the leadership of José Noé Suro, has become globally renowned over the past two decades for partnering with top architecture and design firms and contemporary artists including Jorge Pardo, The Haas Brothers, Pae White, and David Adjaye.
“Taking part in Design Miami/ is always exciting, however this year even more so because of this collaboration,” says José Noé Suro. “Developing this project with SCAD and their talented alumni was a truly unique experience that you will not want to miss out on.”
In addition to the alumni showcase in booth X09, President Wallace will lead a dynamic conversation with Suro and exhibiting alumni Abel Macias, Nikita Nagpal, and Marcelo Suro in the Design Miami/ Design Talks theater at 3:45pm, Thursday, December 1. Additional SCAD at Miami events throughout the week include a VIP and press preview, workshops, and admission info sessions for prospective students and families.
