Terrainforming starts from the given that maps, borders, and landscapes are not only constructions, but fictions and abstractions that nevertheless forecast and foreclose life on earth to come. From here it is worthwhile to begin to look at systems, routes and non-disclosing forms that might act as alternate maps. Through a series of lectures, presentations, and artistic contributions, this two-day program proposes several aterritorial ways of relating to multiple spatial conditions, and to finding social solidarities. Terrainforming brings together several approaches to reading borders, the mapping of information, migrancies, languages of transnationalisms, and ways of visualizing social relations in Seoul and several conjunctions beyond. As a part of the SMB12 pre-biennale, the events forecast a few of the ideas, ways of understanding, artistic practices, and aesthetics of the project to come.
The lectures, performances, presentations, and sonic and video works included in the program deal with how to work from the non-territorial conditions of diaspora through examinations of disputed lands and identities, concepts of networks and non-physical locality, and environmental sensing. Objects of study include rivers, occupations, the tropics, field sounds, radio waves, abstractions, codes, and fragments of representation.

Since its inauguration in 2000 as an initiative of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Seoul Mediacity Biennale has earned international recognition for its experimental engagement with contemporaneity and changes of media in the city. The Biennale has presented conceptual experiences with and on media from its precursor exhibition SEOUL in MEDIA, which was held three times between 1996 and 1999. Since then, the Biennale has presented eleven editions, each embodying varying ideas and activities that resonate with its respective time.
Directed by Rachael Rakes, the 12th Seoul Mediacity Biennale takes place from September 21 until November 19, 2023. The SMB12 public program will begin on September 6, 2023 during Seoul Art Week organized by Seoul City Government.
