The OÖ Landeskultur GmbH, with 15 locations throughout Upper Austria, is the central platform addressing artistic, cultural, scientific, and social issues affecting our province and far beyond. A variety of events and more than 40 exhibitions are scheduled for 2023.
Francisco Carolinum Linz hosts changing exhibitions of photographic and media art. A differentiated approach to visual media is taken here, with a special focus on feminist art and the development of new forms of media expression.
The upcoming solo exhibitions will be dedicated to interesting photographers including Micha Brendel, Kurt Buchwald, and Erich-Wolfgang Hartzsch (February 1–April 30, 2023), as well as the uncompromising radical artist Michaela Moscouw (February 10–May 14, 2023). With Eric Asomoah, a young artist with African roots is showing photos from the homeland of his ancestors (May 4–September 10, 2023).
Painter Yan Pei-Ming (May 24–August 13, 2023) with his monumental large formats that deal with social, political issues as well as with his own existentialism is presented along with the works of Jana Želibská, the grande dame of the Slovakian art scene (June 2–September 17, 2023).
The exhibition Avatar (September 6, 2023–January 2024) will bring together contemporary artistic positions on the theme of the virtual proxy, placing them in an art-historical context.
Sophia Süssmilch will install her Sanatorium Süßmilch in the Francisco Carolinum (September 29, 2023–January 2024) and then spend a month there. In interviews with experts, she will explore the question of whether art can find answers to social and personal crises.
Artificial intelligence, neural networks, and machine learning are the themes in Mario Klingemann’s generative artworks. His solo exhibition (October 13, 2023–January 2024) takes a look at code as a work of art.
The OK Linz is an exhibition space and a laboratory for the networked development of the latest trends in contemporary art.
Current exhibitions show the extensive oeuvre of computer art pioneers Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau and the pixel universe of the CryptoWiener (until February 28, 2023). Solo shows are devoted to Ukrainian artist-in-residence Julia Beliaeva and multimedia artists Hannah & Lea Neckel (March 29–May 21, 2023).
The exhibitions Eva und Adele (June 23–October 8, 2023) and QUEER: Diversity is our Nature will explore the highly relevant topic of diversity, bringing in elements of both nature and culture, including biological findings and current social debates. This is a theme also taken up by Video Club K in Both Sides Now, featuring international artists who deal in their work with queer culture (November 15, 2023–February 2024).
The festival The Non-Fungible Body (June 30–July 2, 2023) and a presentation by Carola Dertnig (November 8, 2023–February 2024) will spotlight international performance art.
Schlossmuseum Linz provides a comprehensive overview of the natural, cultural, and art history of Upper Austria with an emphasis on collecting and research. Special exhibitions highlight current international and regional topics in contemporary history.
On view until 30 March 2023 is the wide-ranging oeuvre of Anna Jermolaewa. A subsequent exhibition is devoted to the exacting work of Gerwald Rockenschaub, one of Austria’s most renowned contemporary artists, known for his radical reduction and precision (March 31–July 2, 2023). Solo exhibitions featuring Gerhard Knogler (May 10–September 3, 2023), Markus Huemer (July 29–November 12, 2023), Margret Wertheim (August 25 2023–January 28, 2024), and Helmuth Gsöllpointner (September 30, 2023–March 2024) will be rounding off the program.
OÖ AIR—Artists and Scientists in Residence Program
This residency program enables exchanges among international cultural institutions, artists, and researchers. Artists and researchers with ties to Upper Austria have the opportunity to further develop their artistic work abroad, gaining broader experience or finding inspiration through a change of perspective. The program is carried out in part in cooperation with the Austrian Foreign Ministry.
AoCG—Academy of Ceramics Gmunden
This lively format will promote mutual inspiration between one of Central Europe’s largest ceramics manufacturers and contemporary artists. International artists are invited to work in Gmunden within the regular processes of the manufactory and to realize their ideas and visions. They are supported by the Gmundner Ceramics team, who provides help and advice.
