For more than 100 years, the Kunsthalle Mannheim, one of the most important museums in the southwestern region of Germany, has been dedicated to the avant-garde and the impact of art on social discourses. Key epoch-making works by artists like Edouard Manet or William Kentridge, an outstanding focus on sculpture, as well as recently acquired works by international, contemporary artists (Rebecca Horn, Alicja Kwade, Kader Attia, Nevin Aladag) characterize our collection. With its 2,300 paintings, 860 sculptures and installations, as well as 34,000 works on paper, it ranks among the top civic collections of modernism. In a new groundbreaking building finished in 2018, we offer a wide variety of participatory programs, at times turning the Kunsthalle into a city in the city that invites Mannheim’s heterogeneous population to not only visit, but also participate in the making of tomorrow’s museum. As a democratic publicly funded institution with a team of app. 40 employees, we additionally pursue a comprehensive digital strategy. We consider exhibitions, collection presentations and educational projects alike as instruments of transcultural communication, with the aim of making the Kunsthalle a place of encounter for people of all generations and cultural backgrounds.
Tasks
Maintaining and conducting research on the collection of the Kunsthalle in the field of international contemporary art and sculpture of the 20th and 21st century
Conception and independent realization of exhibitions of contemporary art and sculpture (including new commissions, loans, exhibition design, publications, educational formats, press and media strategies, budget management, and third-party funding)
Drawing up concepts for strategically expanding and diversifying the collection in line with the strategic goals of the museum
Connecting the Kunsthalle to both local communities and national and internationally networks, as well as effectively communicating with a broader audience in southwestern Germany
Profile
Academic university degree in art history (at least Master or equivalent) or comparable fields of studies
Excellent, substantiated knowledge in the fields of international contemporary art and sculpture of the 20th and 21st century as well as a broad network in the German and international art world
Proven, long-standing experience with museum work is beneficial, for example, as a curator and in maintaining collections
Strong communication skills verbally and in writing regarding both an expert audience and heterogeneous communities
Knowledge in project management, acquisition and accounting of third-party funding, good digital skills (MS Office, MuseumPlus, social media)
English and German language skills (business fluent)

Renumeration
The position will be paid according to the German civil service collective agreement (TVöD) in grade 13. It will be a full time position on a permanent basis.
