Image. Max Ernst in Photographs
January 15–April 23, 2023
Next to Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol, Max Ernst is one of the most photographed artist personalities of the 20th century. He was portrayed under various circumstances and in a variety of contexts. Private snapshots, classic portraits and posed arrangements with artist friends tell of his multifaceted personality and his colourful artist life.
The spectrum of the around 150 selected images, which originated at various times and occasions, provide a photographic perspective on his life, which was marked by his personal experience of two world wars and historical upheavals, by changes of location and his involvement with the group of Dadaists and Surrealists, first in the Rhineland, then in Paris, later in exile in the USA, as well as in Europe.
The exhibition revolving around the representation of Max Ernst in the medium of photography presents the extensive collection holdings of the museum with photographs from, among others, Berenice Abbott, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Lebeck, Lee Miller, Irving Penn and Man Ray, for the first time including an endowment of the artist Dorothea Tanning, the fourth wife of Max Ernst.
Luise Straus Prize / Max Ernst Grant
May 14–July 16, 2023
In a duo-exhibition, the Max Ernst Museum Brühl des LVR presents the recipients of the Luise Straus Prize of The Rhineland Regional Council (LVR) and of the Max Ernst Grant, which is being awarded for the 53rd time by the City of Brühl to international art students. The grant is presented each year on the birthday of the artist Max Ernst, who was born in Brühl. The Luise Straus Prize honours a woman artist for “extraordinary works in the field of Fine Arts” and is presented every two years.
Surreal Futures
August 27, 2023–January 28, 2024
Our times are defined by the effects of globalisation and digitalisation, by the climate crisis, by a contention with colonial structures and increasing diversity. Against this background, Surreal Futures gathers around 30 international positions from the fields of digital and media art that look at the urgent questions of the 21st century.
In an examination of Surrealism and Max Ernst, contemporary tendencies are presented in the sense of a new form of “SurRealism”: an art that dreams itself beyond reality, which reflects changes in our lived-in world and visualises speculative future scenarios.
The project, with contributions from seventeen countries, brings the currentness of Surrealism to life in interactive video works, virtual and augmented reality artworks, hybrid installations, digital collages and multimedia performances. Contemporary works will also be increasingly shown next to the works of Max Ernst within the collection for the first time. This creates a dialogue between Max Ernst and contemporary artists in light of current questions.
