The Department of Art at Wake Forest University invites applications for an associate professor of painting to begin July 1, 2023. Candidates with at least three years of tenure-track teaching experience will also be considered for appointment as an “advanced assistant,” with the possibility of an adjusted tenure clock. Candidates hired at the associate professor level are eligible for tenure pending approval by the Board of Trustees. We seek a dynamic teacher-scholar with an MFA or PhD in art, a track record of excellence in both teaching and creative work, and the professional background to teach all levels of painting in a Studio Art BA program. The teaching load is two courses per semester. We welcome an artist who thinks about painting expansively and who is interested in forging interdisciplinary connections at Wake Forest and in the larger Winston-Salem community. The successful applicant will also have a demonstrated commitment to service, including mentoring and advising students from diverse backgrounds, and a desire to shape the future of the program through leadership roles and curriculum development.

The Art Department includes undergraduate programs in both art history and studio art, with 13 full-time faculty. The department is in the midst of exciting renewal, especially as we are fulfilling our commitment to equity-focused teaching practices and diversity in the design of our curriculum. We are eager to welcome a colleague whose experiences, training, and practices will contribute to our efforts to engage students in understanding and appreciating the richly diverse world of artists and artistic production.
