Artspace New Haven presents exhibitions opening on September 17, 2022 with subsequent programming featuring the work of Ilana Harris-Babou and artistic duo Aeron Bergman & Alejandra Salinas, each engaged with the visual lexica, conditions, and impacts of extractive capitalism.
Ilana Harris-Babou: Revelations
Ilana Harris-Babou’s solo exhibition Revelations presents recent video installations, collages, and ceramics navigating contradictory desires within our all-consuming image culture. Using the aesthetics of advertising and DIY influencing within wellness culture, Harris-Babou’s works stage darkly humorous and subversive revelations about material quick fixes for structural inequities. Rather than offering a critique of biblical proportions, Harris-Babou’s works disclose Black self-determination.
Revelations is accompanied by a series of free public programs and a catalog designed by William Hodgson featuring new research from Re’al Christian, Laurel V. McLaughlin, Yasmina Price, and Wendy Vogel.
Aeron Bergman & Alejandra Salinas: Against the General Good/ Contra el Bien General
In Against the General Good/ Contra el Bien General, the artistic duo Bergman & Salinas (Aeron Bergman and Alejandra Salinas) present a new series of conceptual works including sculptures, mixed-media collages, photography, paintings on canvas, a sound installation, and an essay. This body of work critiques how systems of capitalism corral the commons, against the general good for humans and non-humans alike through the collective, sustainable, and material history of sumi ink.
Against the General Good/ Contra el Bien General will run in parallel with a free series of public workshops and lectures entitled The Commons: towards reclaiming collective power, hosted by Bergman & Salinas during two short-term residencies in September and November 2022 at Artspace New Haven.
