Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art is pleased to present ARTSPECTRUM 2016 from May 12 to August 7. ARTSPECTRUM is a biennial exhibition series of Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art that presents emerging artists who show artistic promise and potential. The exhibition series first began in 2001 and 2016 marks its sixth occurrence. In order to reflect more diverse perspectives, five curators from the curatorial team at Leeum and five art critics from outside the museum recommended and selected ten participating artists. To further encourage and support exceptional artists, the ARTSECTRUM Award will be judged by an independent jury and awarded to a participating artist during the exhibition period.
The artists featured in this exhibition are Dong-il An, Jungki Beak, Haeri Choi, Jane Jin Kaisen, Young Eun Kim, Hoin Lee, Okin Collective, Optical Race, Kelvin Kyung Kun Park, and Minha Park.
The artists selected for this year’s exhibition use a variety of media, including painting, photography, video and installation, and explore a broad spectrum of subjects ranging from personal narrative to the modern history of Korea. One artist takes Korean traditional art as a starting point, some others statistics and graphic design and still another focuses on sound as opposed to the visual—together they demonstrate the history of art that continues to broaden its horizon over time and hint at its future. Other works that have interactive dimensions enrich the exhibition as well. By presenting these diverse works we hope to demonstrate the current state of contemporary Korean art and contemplate its possibilities.
