São Paulo, Brazil
August 24–28, 2022
Brazil is going through a unique moment: in the year we celebrate 200 years of independency, 100 years since the 1922 Modern Art Week and just a month before important presidential elections, the country turns its gaze to the construction of its identity, the urgencies of the environmental cause and the historically silenced voices: Black people, women, indigenous, queer and dissident bodies.
Rotas Brasileiras (Brazilian Routes), SP–Arte’s revamped August fair, is dedicated to the richness and plurality of Brazilian art, and takes place August 24 through 28, at the industrial venue of ARCA, in São Paulo.
Featuring 70 galleries, Rotas Brasileiras embraces the production from the five national regions, focusing on solo shows and curated projects and investing in the multiplicity of artistic languages. It’s a fair for discovering new artists, reclaiming forgotten names and expanding views on regional and popular art.
Brazil’s leading galleries such as Nara Roesler, Luisa Strina, Almeida & Dale, Gomide&Co, Millan and Vermelho join edgy young galleries, namely HOA, the first Black-owned gallery in the country, Verve, Sé and Galatea, besides traditional galleries outside the São Paulo-Rio de Janeiro axis, including Paulo Darzé and Marco Zero, and invited projects from the corners of the country to showcase the best of Brazilian production. You can check the exhibitor list here.
An intense Talks programming features discussions on race and class, Black photography and the challenges of building up a sustainable art environment in Maranhão before the fair and meetings with renowned artists during the days of the event, such as Siron Franco, Alberto Pitta and Panmela Castro.
Rotas Brasileiras is about reimagining the borders between the erudite and the popular, center and periphery, commercial and the institutional, and provide insight into the cosmovision of different “Brazils”.
SP–Arte’s main show, its 19th edition, will take place March 29 through April 2, 2023, at the Bienal Pavilion, also in São Paulo.
