David Zwirner Books is pleased to publish William Eggleston: The Outlands, Selected Works. This new monograph features nearly one hundred previously unseen images from the 1960s and 1970s by one of America’s greatest living photographers. A foreword by the artist’s son William Eggleston III offers critical insight into the process of selecting and sequencing this series of images. In addition, the publication includes an essay by art historian Robert Slifkin in which he reframes Eggleston’s art-historical significance and creates unexpected affinities between Eggleston’s images and works by Marcel Duchamp, Dan Graham, Jasper Johns, and Robert Smithson.
The edition also includes a new short story by Pulitzer Prize winner Rachel Kushner that imagines hitchhikers trekking through the Deep South. In Kushner’s tale, she conceives of an unnamed photographer, who closely resembles the actual photographer William Eggleston. Kushner’s cameo represents her close affection for Eggleston as one of the great American artists of the twentieth century. Recently published in The New Yorker, Kushner’s story asserts that “he changed art history by elevating color photography, and his images taught me to see…His images formalized and made ceremonious an approach to vernacular beauty that is deep-seated and personal for me.” Kusher’s admiration for Eggleston, inspired by his images, mimics her character’s drive to capture the world through a spirited lens.

This significant title coincides with a solo exhibition, The Outlands, opening November 10 at David Zwirner’s 19th Street gallery. The Outlands, a series of photographs taken by Eggleston, establishes the innovative image concepts and lexicon that would become emblematic of his dynamic, experimental practice. The work offers a journey through the mythic and evolving American South, seen through the artist’s lens: vibrant colors and a profound sense of nostalgia echo throughout Eggleston’s breathtaking oeuvre. His motifs of signage, cars, and roadside scenes create an iconography of American vistas that inspired a generation of photographers. The breadth of this work reenergizes his iconic landscapes and forms a new perspective of the American South in transition.
