July 28–September 23, 2022
In August last year, the AFI kicked off its inaugural public events programme with the first annual Alero Olympio Memorial lecture, given by acclaimed Nigerian architect, Mariam Kamara, in honour of the Ghanaian architect Alero Olympio, who died of cancer in 2005. Due to take part in this year’s line-up of speakers from Africa and the Diaspora was Doreen Adengo, the passionate, committed and talented architect from Kampala, Uganda, who tragically passed away on July 23, 2022 after a long battle with cancer.
Doreen founded Adengo Architecture in 2015, a research-based, multi-disciplinary practice operating out of her hometown Kampala, Uganda. A registered architect in the United States and Uganda, she earned her undergraduate degree at Catholic University and her graduate degree at Yale University. She taught at The New School and Pratt Institute in New York; the University of Johannesburg’s Graduate School of Architecture and Uganda Martyrs University. She is mourned by her collaborators, colleagues, and students all over the world, whom she touched deeply during her prolific career.
To honour Doreen, this season of AFI talks is offered in tribute to the legacy of immense joy, inventiveness, and hope that her practice brought to our continent and to the world. Each of our talks will begin with a tribute to Doreen, offering speakers and audience time to reflect on what she meant to so many people and to our profession at large.
