Application deadline: September 9, 2022
Lo Schermo dell’Arte—Cinema and Contemporary Art Festival announces the open call for the 11th edition of VISIO—European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images, a research, residency and production programme dedicated to young artists who use moving images in their artistic practice.
The project, curated by Leonardo Bigazzi, will be held in Florence in conjunction with the 15th edition of the Festival, from November 15 to 20, 2022. Eight selected artists will be invited to Florence to develop their own original projects during an intensive programme of mentoring sessions, round tables and individual meetings, in dialogue with international curators and artists.
VISIO further develops its commitment in supporting younger generations of artists by introducing the VISIO Production Fund, a 40,000 EUR fund conceived in partnership with Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci (Prato), Fondazione In Between Art Film (Rome), FRAC Bretagne (Rennes) and Seven Gravity Collection.
The selected participants will develop their projects with mentors Sophie Cavoulacos, Associate Curator of Film, MoMA (New York) and Valentine Umansky, Curator, Tate Modern (London). Other guests of the programme include artists Rosa Barba and Éric Baudelaire, Erika Balsom, Reader in Film Studies, King’s College London, and Andrea Lissoni, Artistic Director, Haus der Kunst (Munich). The funds will eventually be awarded to four winning artists who will work with the curator and Lo Schermo dell’Arte team to produce and premiere the films at the Festival in 2023. An artist’s edition of each work will become part of the permanent collection of the project’s partner institutions, which are committed to promote and exhibit them in the following years.
The deadline to apply is Friday, September 9, 2022. All information on the application process and conditions can be found at the following link.
Lo Schermo dell’Arte‘s 15th edition programme will consist of over 30 artists’ films and international documentaries on contemporary art presented as world and Italian premieres, in the presence of the authors. Rosa Barba is the protagonist of the Focus On section that Lo Schermo dell’Arte dedicates every year to an artist who has distinguished himself or herself in the innovative and experimental use of cinematographic language. Among the Italian and world premieres the Festival will present Icarus by Italian artist Giorgio Andreotta Calò; Insurrection by American artist and photographer Andres Serrano, supported by a/political, and A Flower in the Mouth by French artist and filmmaker Éric Baudelaire.
The beginning of this new path of VISIO will also be accompanied by the release of the publication dedicated to the first ten years of the project. The book traces the history of VISIO and promotes the research of the 128 artists who took part in the programme and in its exhibitions between 2012 and 2021. The volume investigates the fundamental themes that animate the international debate in the field of moving images through texts and conversations with artists, curators, researchers, collectors and producers involved in the project in recent years.
The selection of participants is realized in partnership with Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Art House (Shkodër), AV-arkki (Helsinki), Careof (Milan), Centro de Residencias Artísticas, Matadero Madrid, De Ateliers (Amsterdam), Gasworks (London), Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin), La Casa Encendida (Madrid), Le Fresnoy-Studio national des arts contemporains (Tourcoing), Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (Amsterdam), the Royal College of Art (London), Royal Institute of Art (Stockholm), Städelschule (Frankfurt), WIELS, Contemporary Art Centre (Brussels).
