Public Programme: The Fortress of Crossed Destinies
July 21–August 27, 2022
“From this arid sphere every discourse and every poem sets forth; and every journey through forests, battles, treasures, banquets, bedchambers, brings us back here, to the centreof an empty horizon.” (Italo Calvino, 1973)
The Fortress of Crossed Destinies is Salzburg International Summer Academy’s public programme of talks and lecture-performances for 2022. It borrow the title from the book by Italo Calvino The Castle of Crossed Destinies, in which the author explores the way meaning is constructed through multiple interpretations beyond the limits of anthropocentric despotism. The “Castle” in the original title has been altered to “Fortress”, not only because the Academy is located in the historical Hohensalzburg Fortress, but also to instigate a paradoxical play on words and nuances. The aim is to symbolically hijack the traditional meaning of a fortress, and transform its duty from guarding monocultural hegemonies, towards guarding the crucial possibility of cross-fertilization and coexistence.
Invited international guests are Zdenka Badovinac, Ángela Bonadies, Vasyl Cherepanyn, Sebastian Cichocki, Ekaterina Degot, Léuli Eshrāghi, Marina Fokidis, Sophie Goltz, Jennifer Higgie, Flaka Haliti, Ania Nowak/Kem School, Metahaven, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, Markus Miessen, Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, Angelo Plessas, Slavs and Tatars, Krista Belle Stewart, Tracey Rose, Tanzim Wahab, Munem Wasif, et al.
The public programme The Fortress of Crossed Destinies, curated by Marina Fokidis, independent curator and publisher of the magazine South as a State of Mind, is part of the ongoing research project Horizons of Possibility initiated by Sophie Goltz, Director, on occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Summer Academy in 2023.

Jomin o Joban: a tale of the land
June 23–August 4, 2022
Stadtgalerie Museumspavillon
Munem Wasif’s first solo exhibition in the German-speaking region shows image-based works which explore the notion of trace in various forms. His complex installations often mix photographs with moving images, archive documents or collected paraphernalia. The artist lives and works in Dhaka (Bangladesh).
Flaka Haliti together with Metahaven and Markus Miessen
JUST BARELY POSSIBLY MAYBE
July 19–September 10, 2022
Galerie Kunst im Traklhaus
For her first solo exhibition in Austria, Munich-based artist Flaka Haliti has invited the artist collective Metahaven and architect Markus Miessen to jointly create a social space for art, a Discourse Bar. In her drawings, photographs, sculptures and installations, Haliti explores a world of digital posthumanity. Haliti’s artistic work can perhaps be described as a “thinking of human life” that points beyond itself and yet does not shy away from conflict with its own materiality.
