Locus Solus
Until December 31, 2022
Curator: Selen Ansen
The group exhibition Locus Solus takes the idea of nature as its centre with the aim of exploring its facets through the lens of facts, fictions and emotions. The exhibition is concerned with the ways in which nature and culture permeate and affect each other; how organic processes and natural environments intersect with human agency and edifices. In the exhibition, “nature” stands primarily as a relational notion which enables to rethink the vast array of connections between places, non-human and human lives. The exhibition brings together works from the Arter Collection with several large-scale installations, including site-specific new productions.
ThisPlay
Until April 9, 2023
Curator: Emre Baykal
Drawn from the Arter Collection, the group exhibition ThisPlay revolves around the concepts of childhood and play. The exhibition aims to explore the liberating aspect of play, its defiant capacity to suspend and reconstruct reality, and the ways it transcends the humdrum of daily life to create unique systems and structures of meaning of its own, within the context of artworks, and the experiences they offer. Approaching art both as a maker and breaker of play through concepts such as competition, tension, chance, imitation, ritual, magic, trance, and pleasure, ThisPlay opens up space for both adults and children to indulge in a play where there is no winner, or everyone wins.
Rounded by Sleep
Until January 29, 2023
Curator: Eda Berkmen
The works which form the group exhibition Rounded by Sleep revolve around such concepts as intimacy and sharing, the individual and society, care and control, resistance and submission, and progress and repetition, all linked to the theme of sleep. The connection that sleep builds with the past and the unconscious is brought to the exhibition space through a selection of contemporary artworks as well as historical representations and archaeological artefacts.
Ahmet Doğu İpek: A Halo of Blackness Upon Our Heads
Until January 29, 2023
Curator: Selen Ansen
Ahmet Doğu İpek’s solo exhibition A Halo of Blackness Upon Our Heads brings together works created by the artist with various mediums between 2020 and 2022 in the context of this exhibition. A Halo of Blackness Upon Our Heads bonds with natural phenomena that not only stem from the absence of light but also continually produce darkness. The works in the exhibition, which build a space for mutual interaction between matter and emotions, fiction and reality, the natural and the artificial, the tangible and the transient, invite visitors to step in a field that allows for perception and witnessing, and where various scales collide.
Bill Fontana: Resounding Io
Until December 4, 2022
Curator: Melih Fereli OBE
The exhibition Resounding Io is based on research surveys conducted by Bill Fontana in Istanbul, whereby the artist made video and sound recordings, some underwater, at numerous locations along the Bosphorus, as well as in two Byzantine cisterns, namely the Theodosius Cistern and the Basilica Cistern. Titled in reference to the mythological story of Io who gave her name to the Bosphorus, this multi-channel sound and video installation is a unique addition to Fontana’s series Acoustical Visions which explores the image that a sound “makes” and the sound that an image “creates”. The exhibition welcomes visitors thanks to the funding provided by Grundig for the exhibition production and the acquisition of the work for the Arter Collection.
