The 2023 Exhibition and Music Programme at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Norway
Chagall: World in Turmoil
March 17–June 18, 2023
The exhibition sheds light upon a lesser-known aspect of Marc Chagall’s (1887-1985) practice, namely his works from the 1930s and 1940s, in which the artist’s colourful palette darkens. The life and work of the Jewish painter was deeply influenced by the artistic policy of National Socialism and the Holocaust. During the early 1930s, Chagall’s work increasingly explored the aggressive anti-Semitism prevailing in Europe, and he eventually emigrated to the United States in 1941. His artworks from this period touch upon central and pertinent themes such as identity, homeland and exile.
The exhibition is organised by Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt in cooperation with Henie Onstad Kunstsenter.

New Visions: The Henie Onstad Triennial for Photography and New Media
April 14–September 17, 2023
Henie Onstad presents the second edition of New Visions – The Henie Onstad Triennial for Photography and New Media. The triennial takes the pulse of experimental practices within contemporary photography and new media, and the second edition directs attention to artists and practices associated with Eastern Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia. The triennial includes seven newly commissioned works within the mediums of sculpture, textile, monumental wall and video installations. Central themes explored are energy production and distribution, the extraction of natural and man-made resources and, by extension, the ecological, social and political consequences of these ventures.

Per Barclay: Vortex
August 18, 2023–TBA
The Norwegian artist Per Barclay (b. 1955) is presented in a solo exhibition with representative works from his 40-year artistic career. Barclay’s practice encompasses photography, sculpture, and installation and makes use of materials such as stone, steel, aluminium, glass, water, and waste oil. Several works in the survey exhibition contextualise Barclay within the Arte Povera movement, and many works have influenced the work of several generations of Norwegian artists.

Magdalena Abakanowicz: Every Tangle of Thread and Rope
October 27, 2023–February 25, 2024
In the 1960s and 1970s, the Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz (1930–2017) created radical sculptures from woven fibre. They were soft, ambiguous, organic, towering works that were hung from the ceiling and ground-breaking as they created a new form of installation. The works would eventually become known as Abakans. The exhibition provides a rare opportunity to explore these extraordinary works through several of the most important Abakans. Abakanowicz significantly influenced Norwegian textile artists in the 1960s and 1970s, in part through Henie Onstad’s comprehensive presentation Magdalena Abakanowicz: Organic Structures in 1977.
The exhibition is organised by Tate Modern in collaboration with Henie Onstad and the Fondation Toms Pauli at Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne/Plateforme 10.

Young Photographers
June 9–September 10, 2023
Young Photographers is an annual mentor-driven programme developed by Henie Onstad. The programme was established in 2019, and Henie Onstad is proud to present the work of the fourth cohort of rigorously selected participants.

Flux! Merz! Pop!
New installation from April 27, 2023
The exhibition is dedicated to the German avant-garde artist Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) and his colleagues and successors. Schwitters was one of the most distinctive and versatile artists of the first half of the 20th century. The artistic approaches and strategies he developed greatly influenced later generations in the avant-garde tradition. The exhibition shows works from The Savings Bank Foundation DNB’s collection alongside material from the Henie Onstad Collection and archive.

Music at Henie Onstad
Over the course of 2023, Henie Onstad will, as usual, host several world premieres as part of its music programme. One of these is an audiovisual commissioned work for New Visions by the Georgian composer Mariam Gviniashvili. Another highlight is the American composer, experimental rock musician and sonic explorer Tyondai Braxton, who shall make a rare appearance at the art centre in March.
