Join us for the lecture-performance burn, on fire, alight, inflamed, glow, ablaze, fervent, go up in smoke (2017, 25 minutes) by Olia Sosnovskaya. The lecture-performance will be followed by a conversation between Sosnovskaya and curator and writer Aleksei Borisionok, contextualizing Sosnovskaya’s work in relation the current social uprising in Belarus (since 2020) and the ongoing Russian military invasion of Ukraine.
The lecture-performance is part of the artist’s ongoing research on the political dimensions of celebration and collective movements. It addresses the histories of (post)socialist festivals, rave culture, and recent protest events, intertwining affect and ideology, language and its embodiment. Superimposing various texts, historical narratives, and media representations, it studies the revolutionary event and its co-optation by capitalist and state apparatuses.

Join us for a screening of Return to Oualad Moumen (1944, 48 minutes) and Aïta (1988, 26 minutes) by Moroccan filmmaker Izza Génini, curated and introduced by Shasha Movies’ Róisín Tapponi. A pioneer of Moroccan cinema, Génini specializes in narrative documentaries. Her films explore diasporic identity and traditional Moroccan history, with a focus on the region’s music. Shasha Movies is thrilled to honor Izza Génini in this event organized in partnership with e-flux Screening Room, and welcomes everyone to visit the Shasha Movies website, where Génini’s whole filmography will stream globally from June 1 to July 31.
Return to Oualad Moumen (1944, 48 minutes)
In south Marrakesh amidst the olive groves lies the village of Oulad Moumen where Habiba and Yossef Edery began their family in the 1920s. Director Génini, the youngest of the nine Edery children, organized a family reunion in 1992 to bring her family (now dispersed geographically and culturally) together in the place where is all began. 50 members of the family came from Morocco, France, America, Canada, Mexico, Italy, and Israel to Oulad Moumen to learn of the dynasty’s origins. Genini melds the family reunion with archival photos, giving both a personal view of a Sephardic family and a historical picture of Jewish-Arabic-Berber coexistence in Oulad Moumen.
Aïta (1988, 26 minutes)
Interpreted by cheikhate (female traveling musicians), aïta is the cry that becomes song, song which becomes call: cry to pain, call to memory, call to transcendence. The aïta is a cry of love and hope. With Moroccan cheikha Fatna Bent El Hocine and her troupe Oulad Ben Aguida.
