Hyundai Motor Group launches an open call for the 5th VH AWARD, Asia’s leading award for new media artists.
Five shortlisted applicants will have the opportunity to produce new work, participate in an online residency program and present their pieces in exhibitions held in collaboration with esteemed platforms and institutions across the globe.
Individual artists, teams, and collectives who engage with Asia and its future will be eligible to apply.
Applications can be submitted through the VH AWARD website from May 26, 2022 to July 28, 2022.
Hyundai Motor Group announces an open call for the 5th VH AWARD, Asia’s leading award for new media artists. Established in 2016, the VH AWARD supports the discovery and exhibition of emerging media artists who converge art with technology and engage with the context of Asia and its future.
Applicants for the 5th edition of the award will be required to submit a proposal to produce audiovisual screen-based works that may include, but are not limited to, video art, moving image, film, motion graphics, computer animation, gaming and more. Applications can be submitted by an individual, team or collective. Applications will be accepted from all over the world, including artists with a connection to Asia who are based outside of Asia. Submissions can be made through the VH AWARD website from May 26, 2022 until July 28, 2022.
In 2021, the VH AWARD extended its eligibility to artists beyond South Korea to include those whose works creatively portray and question the vast array of issues across Asia, cementing the award as one of the most important opportunities for emerging media artists in the region. In 2022, applications for the 5th VH AWARD will be reviewed by a group of international jurors. Finalists will be selected for their originality and aesthetics, compelling conception and innovation, quality of presentation and sophisticated employment of technology. Jury members include accomplished artworld professionals such as Martin Honzik (Chief Curatorial Officer of Ars Electronica and Managing Director of Ars Electronica Festival, Prix, and Exhibitions); Sook-Kyung Lee (Senior Curator, International Art (Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational) of Tate Modern); Roderick Schrock (Curator, Executive Director of Eyebeam); Aaron Seeto (Director of Museum MACAN); and Yukiko Shikata (Independent curator and art critic).
The five shortlisted artists, teams or collectives will each receive a grant of 25,000 USD for the production of new artworks. In addition, through a partnership with EYEBEAM, the prominent not-for-profit art and technology center based in New York City, the five shortlisted artists or teams will be invited to participate in an online residency program led by networked artists and curators of EYEBEAM from October to December 2022 before the submission of their final works.
The Grand Prix recipient will be announced during an award ceremony in May 2023. The winner will receive an additional grant of 25,000 USD, with artworks by all finalists exhibited across various platforms around the globe.
The call for entries will close on July 28, 2022 at 11am EST / 12am KST. Applicants must submit the required materials online only through the official VH AWARD website.
