e-flux is delighted to present an evening of music and conversation with Maurice Louca, an avant jazz and electronic musician based in Cairo. Louca is on his first North America tour in a decade after recently releasing his fourth studio album Saet El Hazz (The Luck Hour), described by The Guardian as “transcendent beauty in an unholy racket.” The Wire called his 2014 record Salute the Parrot “an exhilarating homage to the teeming energy of Egypt—politically ravaged but musically irrepressible,” adding that “Louca’s album is not shaabi, but shaabi’s explosive arrival is his context. He’s doing what artists are supposed to do—keeping his ears open and responding.”
In addition to Louca’s solo work, he is the co-founder of the bands Bikya, Alif, and Dwarfs of East Agouza, and active in Karkhana, Lekhfa, and other groups and collaborations. Over the last decade he has toured extensively in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, and has composed music for dance, visual arts, and theater.
At e-flux, Louca’s performance will be followed by a conversation with writer and e-flux journal editor Brian Kuan Wood. Then we’ll all head to Bar Laika for a DJ set with Brooklyn local Yara Bey.
